Getting your employer to pay for college
71
Paying for college can quickly add up because of how high tuition currently is, plus the fact that tuition seems to rise every year. When you are going to college, you are looking for all different ways that you can save money on your tuition, which saving money on tuition means you can put more money into your savings account to build up a cash reserve.
One thing that you can do to help pay for college is to go to work for a company that offers tuition reimbursement, which the best part is most places do not require that you work full-time to qualify for the tuition reimbursement. What this means is that all you will have to do is work part to get them to help you pay for some of your college education, however, you might have to agree to work for them full time for a specific number of years once you have graduated. Doing this is well worth it because your employer will be paying a large portion of your college education, which allows you to save even more money for your cash reserve.
For example, if you work part-time at FedEx/Kinko's you can qualify for tuition reimbursement as soon as you begin working for them, this means that you do not have to go through a waiting period to qualify for the benefit. Not having to wait to qualify means you can start saving money on your tuition as soon as possible. How it works at FedEx/Kinko's is that for every hour that you work they will pay so much towards your college tuition. In one year of working, you can earn up to $3,500 in tuition reimbursement. When you add the money that you are getting back through tuition reimbursement to the money that you are making working for them part time, it turns out to be a good deal.
When working for a company that offers tuition reimbursement you are going to have to meet certain guidelines in order to receive the reimbursement. In working at FedEx/Kinko's you are going to have to complete the course work with at least a "C-" to get reimbursed for undergraduate work, where if you are getting reimbursed for graduate work you will need to get at least a "B-". With some colleges if you work for certain companies that offer tuition reimbursement instead of having to pay your tuition in full at the beginning of the semester you can wait until your check comes after you have proven your grades or they will allow you to pay your tuition in installments so tat you can afford it.
FedEx/Kinko's is not the only company that allows you to work part time and receive tuition reimbursement. However, unlike the larger companies who pay for all of your college educations as long as you are taking courses that involve your current work position these companies offer limited help to their qualified employees. The main reason that they offer tuition assistance is because it is a financial benefit to get employees to come work for them, and it is a benefit not having the huge restrictions placed on what courses you can take. Just keep in mind that most places are going to require you to have been employed with the company for a certain period of time before you qualify for the tuition reimbursement.
