Working from home: advantages and disadvantages

There can be 2 types of work at home jobs:

1. Independent work from home jobs including home-based business.

2. Employees working from home instead of company office.

Nature of the work from home jobs is important to understand if it is suitable to work from home or from office. There are jobs suitable for home working and at the same time there are jobs that should be done at office. Following are some of the jobs that can be done from home:

  • Telesales and marketing
  • Customer service
  • Consultancy and professional services
  • Writing, editing, research and translation
  • Some administrative work

Working from home is not suitable for everyone. An employee working from home should understand time management and self-discipline. He should have self motivation.

Working from home is a new trend in the corporate world number of employees working at home is always increasing. This trend has several advantages and disadvantages associated with it.

Let us now understand advantages and disadvantages of working from home:


Working from Home: Advantages

1. Homeworking can help retain working parents with childcare responsibilities.

2. More talent to recruit from - Disabled people who may prefer to work from home can also be recruited.

3. Increased staff motivation with reduced stress and sickness levels.

4. Savings on office space and other facilities.

5. Possible location of sales staff near clients rather than being based in the company premises away from clients.

Working from Home: Disadvantages

1. It is difficult to manage and monitor home workers performance.

2. Possible deterioration in employees' skills and work quality because they are isolated from office environment that can make them dull.

3. Initial costs of training and providing suitable equipment.

4. Staff training and development gets difficult.

5. Risk of information-security. Home workers cannot be blindly trusted as far as information security is concerned.

6. Increased telecommunications costs.

7. Risk of communication problems and a sense of isolation among home workers because he or she is working all alone at home with no communication with colleagues.

8. Harder to maintain team spirit.

Conclusion

Working from home is suitable to certain jobs and unsuitable for several other jobs. Homeworking doesn't necessarily means that employees have to work only at home. Job or timing can be splitted between home and the workplace. This also increases productivity.

You make a lot of good points. I think the biggest hurdle for someone who has always worked in a place where they are told what to do is to function independently. The key word is Discipline.

Advantages / disadvantages you mentioned were only from employers side. I was looking for the ones pertaining to the employee. :) I guess that calls for another hub. :)

Ya Maybe. But an employee working from home has no dress code to follow. He / She can work in a Barmuda. Disadvantage is that a person working from home gets dull.
