The catcher in baseball is one of the most important players. He's the leader of the team and he needs to react quickly to any situation that might occur. Therefore he must have excellent physique that allows him to stay sharp and alert throughout the entire game.

The catcher has the entire field in front of him and he must be able to read the game and see what's going to happen next. They are responsible for getting the most out of their pitchers and teammates.

Because baseball is a fast game, the catcher has to have enough practice that he can act without thinking. He must be able to anticipate players running speed, playing situation, and the surface of the playing field to name a few of the things.


If you are a catcher then you need to be the toughest guy on the team. You are the leader and you have to have the best physique. Or at least one of the best physiques on the team. You need to have this because you need to have the respect of all the players on your team. A way to achieve this is to have the best physique. It isn't guaranteed but it surely helps.

You need to have great overall strength and power but these areas of your body needs to be developed in a good baseball catcher...

These areas are: Your legs, hips, abs, back, shoulders, arms, and hands.

In baseball you have to run and you have to throw so you have to develop these two things as well. To improve your running you should practice short sprints. 60 yard sprints are an excellent way of improving your running speed and you should be doing this a lot.

To develop your throwing arm you should do an exercise that is called long toss. This is a great exercise that will build the strength of your arm, shoulder, and hand. To do long toss you need a little bigger ball. A softball is great to use for thisexercise. Begin to throw as long as you can (it's easier if you are two people tossing to each other.)

Another area that you need to work on a lot are your legs. As a catcher you will be sitting in a squatting position for a long time and it's required that you don't become uncomfortable in this position. With that said, you should also stretch a lot so you can stay in this position.

But in order to develop leg strength you should work a lot with exercises like knee press. Make sure that you train to become better at performing inbaseball , not at becoming better at lifting weights at the gym. Use free weights when you do knee press because it will develop your coordination and balance as well. Knee press is also great for the lower back and abs.

To improve your abs and core you need to work a lot with a medicine ball. Don't skip the core workout because it's what gives you power. Medicine ball workouts where you twist your body are great because they stimulate the same muscles used when throwing abaseball.

The choice of many catchers is to use a medicine ball for their workouts but every exercise that targets the abs are good. Avoid training your abs in a machine as it doesn't give you the balance you get if you use your body weight. Also, exercises that involve a pilates ball are great as you work on balance and coordination at the same time.

Another thing that is commonly overlooked is the practice of giving hand signals. There is no need to rush when giving a signal. It's veryimportant that you angle the hands so that the pitcher can see what you want very clearly. This is very important and you should take time to practice this, so your signals stays the same even under stressful situations.
