63Azeroth, and Outland, the two main worlds that players of the Blizzard Entertainment game World of Warcraft explore and adventure over in the game, are huge and detailed. It is a good idea for a player to know where he/she is. The Alliance and the Horde, the two main factions of the game, have outposts, bases, and cities scattered all over. An unwary player could accidentally waltz right into the opposing faction’s outpost, and have a sudden visit to the Spirit Healer.
There are two in-game maps; the world map, and the mini-map.
The world map is the big picture of Azeroth and Outland. The world map only displays areas the player as already explored. Roads, zones, cities, and geographic features are all displayed on the world map. The world map displays icons for local building and dungeons.
Map coordinates are vital when questing. The world map (hit the M key when playing) does not have an automatic coordinate display. An add-on is required for this. There are several out there, and they mostly all do the same thing: provide xy coordinates for both the player’s location and the location of the cursor. A map coordinate add-on is the single most indispensable add-on a player needs.
Please note that dungeons and instances are not available on the world map, you can only get the limited mini-map view. There are add-ons that contain world-map views of dungeons and instances.
The in-game mini-map is vital for a player when both exploring and when questing. The mini-map offers an overhead view of the area around a character. The mini-map has limited zooming, in and out.

The mini map offers a few vital features.
- The name of the region (or city) that your character is in
- The local geography
- The location of your character appears as a silver arrow pointing in the direction (N, E, W, S) you’re current facing
- A tombstone icon to indicate your corpse when dead
- Nearby party members appear as blue dots. Arrows point to far-off party members.
- Some classes have the ability to detect humanoids, beasts, or demons; these detections appear on the mini-map as dots
- Some professions can detect resources, such as mining nodes or herbs to harvest; these detections appear on the mini-map as dots
- Completed quest turn-ins appear as gold dots on the mini-map
- Day or night, and the current server time
- A “You have mail” icon indicates when there is unread mail for the player
Printed and/or online maps of Azeroth are available. There are map posters and printed atlases for those who want see Azeroth and Outland off line. There are also many on-line sources for maps, some maps are even interactive.

- One Boss Leaves: Krik'thir flays Gortok Palehoof
Two Bosses Enter ... but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com's series of fantasy death matches. This season's combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King. Gortok Palehoof got the raw end of the deal inside the Two Bosses Thunderdome this week, as his one-minion-at-a-time strategy folded under the onslaught of Krik'thir the Gatewatcher's slice-and-dice minions. The outcome was decisive: 58 percent for the Nerubian, and only 36 percent for the Magnataur. Quite a few spectators thought the outcome would have been different if Palehoof had been allowed to deploy his entire collection at once - but alas, in keeping the fight structure reasonably close to what players experience, it was not to be. Vodkamartini: Dear WoW.com, I want to thank you for setting the rules in my favor. With my team able to take on my opponent's lackeys one at a time, it was a simple slaughter. I can't remember if it was the idiot furbolg or the worm (A WORM? WHO BRINGS THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOD CHAIN TO A FIGHT?) that aggroed the entire room, but it went quite quickly after that. Watcher Narjil believed the opposing group, with one attacking in hopes of the Watch Him Die achievement, while the rest stupidly stood there, too busy to contemplate imminent slaughter or arguing over who gets my Golden Limb Bands, may have been in what the humanoids call a "Leeroy Jenkins moment." - Around Azeroth: The blue sword
We haven't gotten a whole lot of PTR pics here in Around Azeroth lately. Reclusive of Daggerspine-EU always comes through, though, and sent in this screenshot of a certain important sword hanging in a certain important new dungeon. Not to spoil anything, but I heard that the gimmick in this fight consists of a plate of delicious pie hanging beneath Frostmourne. When the hungry players run to the dessert, the sword falls on their heads. Ingenious! Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! - Local paper profiles TCG $50k winner
This is cool -- after local paper the Winter Park/Maitland Observer (near Orlando, Florida) heard that the winner of Upper Deck's last WoW TCG World Championships was from the same area, they went and found him, fittingly, in a game store. William Postlewaite, a.k.a. Billy P, won $50,000 just for playing the WoW Trading Card Game very, very well. While there's not a lot of info on the actual mechanics behind his win (this is a local paper, after all), it's very interesting to get a look at the player himself -- he works at the game store while going to school to learn finance, and spent about two months testing decks of cards with a friend before he found the one that he thought could go all the way. And what's he doing with all of his winnings? He's planning to buy a house. Smart play.
