The long awaited lauch of world's cheapest car "Tata Nano" took place in Mumbai, India on 23rd March'09. The car from India is said to be the cheapest car in the world with a dealer price of Rs 1 Lakh (100,000) i.e. approximately $ 2050 only. On the launch of the car, Mr. Ratan Tata (Chairman, Tata Group) said, "The journey started six years ago when we overtook what looked like just another business... a business to give Indian families an affordable transport means, a small car which was very low in cost. It is to the credit of the team what we have achieved today". He has fulfilled his promise to provide a the cheapest car to Idians, which is safe, affordable and fuel efficient as well.

The four-door Tata Nano can comfortably seat four people, with more leg space and head room. - the interior design of the Nano is much superior to the Maruti 800 another cheaper car in India. Tata Nano is 3.1 meters in length, 1.6 meters in height, and 1.5 meters in width with a wheelbase of 2230 mm and ground clearance of 180 mm.

The engine is at the rear of the car and it is all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol (MPFI) engine. Front end of the car is very light, as the engine is at the rear side. Hence there is no need for a power steeing.

In terms of performance, the Tata Nano can go from 0 to 60 Kmph in approximately in 8 Seconds, with a top speed of 105 kph. The car can go for about 23 Kms with one litre of petrol and the fule tank capacity is 15 Litres.

The other features of Tata Nano includes tube-less tyres, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages.

Features of Tata Nano Variants

There are three variants of Tata Nano, Standard, Deluxe and Luxury.

The Standard Tata Nano, basic model, is likely to be priced at (Rs 1.25 lakhs) ex-showroom. This will be the cheapest version of the Nano. Its features include a speedometer, odometer, folding rear seats, 2-spoke steering wheel, and no airconditioning. The colors available are Bright Red, Ivory White, and Summer Blue.

The Deluxe variant of Tata Nano is equiped with air-conditioning/heater, body colored bumpers, reclining/adjustable driver and co-driver seat, speedometer, odometer, 2-spoke steering wheel, and folding rear seats. The colours available are Bright Red, Ivory White, Summer Blue, Champagne Gold, and Lunar Silver.

The Luxury variant of the Tata Nano will have alloy wheels, fog lamps, air- conditioning, body-colored bumpers, tripmeter, front power windows, 3-Spoke steering wheel, front and rear fog lamps, and central locking. The colours are Champagne Gold, Lunar Silver, and Sunshine Silver.

Tata is also planning to launch this car in Europian countries, with slight changes according to their standards. Accordingly company had demonstrated The Nano Europa in auto-expo as well.
