I saw on television today that a 12 year old girl recently underwent liposuction surgery. She is not the youngest person to undergo surgery, so that is not why this issue is so controversial.
I suppose the controversy of this issue lies in the fact that this procedure is often associated with vanity. Obesity has officially been declared an epidemic in America, and our national media is very image conscious. So, when you talk about a 12 year old girl having liposuction surgery, the first place your mind goes is to ask "How vain can you get?!"
For those of you who may not know, liposuction is a surgical procedure in which fat is directly removed from a person's body. That's right, a person is literally cut open, fat is taken out (like gutting a fish, or scraping the fat off of a chicken before baking it!), and then they are sewn up again.
I guess this fact adds to the controversy, because any surgical procedure is dangerous. Whenever you undergo surgery, your immune system is weakened due to the energy your body uses to try to heal itself after the procedure.
So, a person wonders, what are the parents of this girl thinking to allow their daughter to undergo dangerous, invasive, surgery, all for the sake of losing weight?
People may argue that it also encourages the girl to have the idea that she can get a quick fix to all of her problems as opposed to encouraging healthy habits such as eating right and exercising! There are people out there who are actually addicted to plastic surgery. So, you wonder how early you should get your kids started? Are you setting them up on a dangerous path?
Like I said before, this girl is not the youngest person to undergo surgery. Babies and toddlers undergo invasive surgery for congenital defects (i.e. people who are born deformed), but people argue that those people can't help being born with those problems and have no alternative solution. This girl just seems vain, and her parents are supporting her vanity!!!
But then again, 12 years old is not as young as we try to make it seem. I think the main idea behind the whole age issue is that people are living longer than ever these days (according to scientists). So, even though a 12 year old may have been old enough to marry in ancient times, nowadays, we need to be careful about raising our kids. (Speaking of 12 year olds, I went to school with a girl who had a baby at 12 years old) So, are we asking too much of our kids when we demand a certain level of "maturity" from them?
I think more and more parents are taking drastic measures to make sure their kids "fit in" in this demanding society. They rush to get their kids in the best schools, put them on "smart drugs", get them surgery (If they have the money, that is) so they can stay ahead of the curve. But is this healthy?
I remember a few years ago, one of the leading stories was a teenager whose parents got her breast implants...
I have no opinions on this matter, because these are not my kids and I don't know the situation of the parents or the kids. I just think we should all try to make good and healthy decisions for ourselves and our children.
What do you think?

Good grief what is this world comming to I have 3 kids i wouldnt let my kids have liposuction surgery at this young age .
I am glad Dutch is writing about this though because people should know about these things. I was so innocent as a child coloring and reading picture books. In the fifth grade one of my classmates came to school as a hooker for Halloween and I thought she was a ghost because of her white costume LOL. Anyway, I did not figure out what this word meant until a year later. However, I think things are even more open now because I have heard of pre-school children dressing up as hookers for Halloween.
What happen to playing with Barbie Dolls. That is so wrong make them stay kids as long as they can you have to grow up to fast as it is. Great Hub
Why dont parents take the responsible option. What is wrong with a correct diet and exercise. Let this rather become a lifelong ambition or even an addiction (look at Jane Fonda at 70 odd). It seems everyone always wants the "quick fix". I have often wondered what those "extreme makeover" people are like 12 months on. Perhaps an "extreme makover reprise - 12 months on" may make some fascinating or even horrifying viewing! By the way the girl herself looks 12 going on 21!
Great hub keep up the great work.
hi
you have voiced your concern right.
but liposuction is not a surgery where they cut open and strip fat and then sew them up as you have published
liposuction is done with small key hole and the fat is sucked off as a cosmetic approach.
i have done lots of surgeries on children less than 12 years with appendicitis and tumours and haemangiomas.
when there is a need we got to do it and the situation compels it.
with regards to liposuction it is optional because it is a cosmetic surgery
I believe in exercise and balanced meals.
I'm with you Jennifer. My daughter eats healthy and exercises as do we. That is the way to lose weight. Especially for a child not even a teenager yet. I cringe when they draw my daughters blood! I cannot even imagine! Great Hub dutch. Keep em comin.
I agree with you 100%. This is just absurd, having kids do this sort of thing completely distorts their image of beauty. Self-image is in its own right distorted because of the endless barrage celebrities face in tabloid magazines. Kids look up to this, and its a shame because society has made it OK for a 12/13 year old to question her body, looks and what is or is not acceptable in the eyes of the public. It is a shame because I have a sister who struggles with her body and she is barely a teenager. Gone are the days when you didn't care about your body but about being a teenager and enjoying life. Thank you for bringing this matter to light.
This is VERY sad. Utterly so.I don't think it's so much that she wanted to do it, what's more shocking is that her parents allowed her to do it. Hmm...From a fellow Igbo sista, take care...
sick. why dont they teach their kids to be more active and not sit on the couch all day playing playstation? i wouldnt even get lipo and Im 32.
Hey.....well im 16 and im thinking of getting LIPO.....ive been trying to loose wieght for over 2 years. For some people its their last hope. I get picked on every day for my wieght. I eat very little and i walk 2 miles a day.....and still im so fat.....so for me this si my final option
Ok..Hey Im 15 years old.. And Im active..I play Volleyball, Softball and i eat healthy and i barely watch tv.. And Im sure not skinny.. So I think if kids want 2 get Lipo its there choice and parents choice nobody can change that. And Its not all about peoples images. I mean I have alot of friends.. But I would consider gettting Lipo. And if people dont like what other people do. WHO CARES!!! its not ur life.. Its theirs!!
So Yeah :)
by her jean size she was big, its not like she was 12 with a little bit of fat
if my kid was obese i would let them have liposuction.... they shouldnt have to live through there whole childhood being sickly and unhealthy, not to mention being teased. i am sure the parents of this child tried healthy diets and weight loss plans, and personal trainers and some people just cant lose the weight. i would allow my child to get lipo is him or her needed it.

No because I feel liposuction teaches people to have an unhealthy view of their body. I feel exercise and diet can be just as appealing as any type of plastic surgery or altering of the body.
