You know what? I bet you never let your children play in the street, right? What with the traffic, strange people, not to mention other nutcase kids with knives or guns! The world is much too dangerous these days! Well, that's the way it seems, anyway. I know the feeling. My fifth child, a little boy called Siôn, is just 15 months old now.
No, we make sure they're safe. When they go to school in the morning, we take them in the car. When they want to go to a party, we make sure they get there safely and, perhaps even more important, we make sure they get back home safely. Dad or Mum's car is not called, "The taxi", for nothing, right?
It's no wonder, really, that the next generation is getting fatter. Obesity is the new danger for our children. Even adults are becoming more and more obese. Now, of course, it doesn't have to be that way. The more discerning parents are taking care of their children in all ways, healthy eating, exercise as well as making sure they're safe outside the home. In fact, they lend them a helping hand whatever the circumstances. They are there for them and are willing to answer all their questions.
I just cannot understand those parents who let their children run wild. They only regret it in the long run. The grown up children do not have any thoughts for their parents. They just think that their parents never cared enough about them to give them the correct guidance, so they decide they don't need to look after their parents in their old age.
The trouble is, this often creates a vicious circle. The new parents behave as badly as their parents did and so it goes on. We're all reaping the horrible rewards of this cycle of events from generation to generation.
Even our politicians seem to be doing things for their own, selfish benefit, rather than the good of the Country. There are so many in Parliament that have been given an excellent start to life, you'd think they'd be more concerned about the needs of others. Currently, many of them seem to be more concerned about what is going to happen to them in about a year's time. But they really are barking up the wrong tree.
Surely they should ALL be working together to get the best possible results for the country in these difficult times. It cannot be beyond them to work out a strategy to counteract all the negative external effects and formulate a way for the UK, not just to survive, but to prosper. Why are they not pulling in all the best business brains in Britain? We have plenty of entrepreneurs who have fought their way through setbacks and desperate times to go on to succeed. Why are they not being used to help the Country?
Actually, I have never understood the business of "whips" in Parliament. It's as though the party is more important than the Country. If the Government of the day loses a vote, so what? Parliament as a whole has decided the answer to a particular question and that's how it should be. Perhaps if they all worked together a bit more, instead of the opposition automatically opposing everything the government puts forward, we might well get better ‘Parliamentary' government, rather than one ‘party' government.
Fortunately, there are some responsible parliamentarians and parents that don't just think of themselves and what people will think of them. They help when and where they can. Thinking parents, while allowing their children a little rope, do not give them so much that they hang themselves.
For example, when my first two children, one of each, were about 8 and 5, we lived just around the corner from a parade of shops. There was one, not too busy road, to cross to get to the shops. We sent them to the shops together to buy a few things. However, staying out of their sight, I followed them to the shops, waited until they came out and discretely followed them back. Once they were in through the front door, I rushed round to the back garden and sat down, enjoying my drink!
They thought they had gone on a big adventure on their own. To all intents and purposes they had, but at the same time, I made sure they were safe.
What about the internet ‘jungle'? Many people are afraid of getting stung and they're quite right to be afraid. There are so many crooks and unsavoury characters willing to prey on the unwary. You really do need to be careful and use ‘due diligence' before you venture into the unknown.
Look carefully at what is on offer. Does the company offer helpful material to get you started and sustain you once you are on your way? Do the internet shops really have a secure ordering system and do they actually deliver the goods that you want?
Fortunately, there are some businesses you can try on the internet that also behave like responsible parents. Not obtrusive, but there whenever they are needed to help. They have plenty of useful materials to guide you, and you're only a phone call or an email away from any help you need.
