A complete guide to everything you need to know about wrapping paper, including where to get it and which kind to choose.

Wrapping paper has been around for centuries. Much like the act of giving gifts itself, it is an important part of our culture and customs, and nowadays the paper you choose to wrap your gift in has almost as much significance as the actual gift that you are giving. Sales of gift paper have risen dramatically over the past few years as more people enjoy splashing out for birthdays, Christmases and other festivals and occasions, so it is important that you make the effort to find the right gift paper first. This guide will tell you how.

One of the best sources of quality paper are gift shops. It is their job to stock a wide variety of paper, greeting cards, small gifts, balloons and other celebratory items, and in any good gift shop you will find a section dedicated to selling wrapping paper. One of the good points of using a gift store to get your paper is that they have enough variety for you to choose a paper that perfectly matches the gift you are giving. For birthday gifts they will have paper that is decorated with pictures of items like cakes and candles, or for significant birthdays years like 18 and 21, they will have the age of the person you are buying for. This makes it the perfect place to match your paper with the gift your are giving.

The same is true for other occasions too -- if you are giving a wedding gift then why not buy paper that has pictures of a bride, wedding bouquet or wedding cake on them. For gifts for girls look for paper that is decorated in pink colours with pictures of dolls or make-up, and for gifts for boys look for paper that is decorated in blue colours with pictures of footballs or cars. When buying a gift for someone who is older, why not look for wrapping paper that has a funny picture or pattern that matches their personality. When you are giving gifts for Christmas or another holiday season, why not use paper that is decorated with relevant pictures, such as snowmen or Santa Claus. The choices really are endless.

Ways to make your gift even better can include buying wrapping ribbon to go over the top of your paper. Again ribbon is usually available from all good gift stores, and you can choose from a wide range of ribbon types, colours, qualities and prices. Wrapping up a gift can be tricky to do without making it look messy, so if wrapping the gift yourself is not something you are confident doing, why not ask the retailer in the gift shop to do if for you. A good gift shop should offer this service anyway.

There is so much choice available in high street stores and online that it should be easy to choose and buy the right wrapping paper for the right occasion.
