My Town of Mora

The town I live in is Mora, Minnesota. I live on one of the few lakes in this town. I have lived in this town for about 24 years of my life. The town has a nonprofit single screen movie theater, skateboard park, public pool with waterslides, county fair ground, ice hockey center, and three schools.

The area is heavily wooded and has a lot of farmland. The town is based in central Minnesota. Winters can get fairly cold with an average temp of 12F. Summer is a nice warm 78F on average. The area is considered in the northern part of the known "Tornado Alley". The summers are mild but known to be humid if the rain is heavy. Winters can average about a 2 to 3.5 feet of snow.

The city of Mora (Named after the sister city Mora, Sweden) sits at the junction of Minnesota Highway 23 and Minnesota Highway 65, and is located in Kanabec County, Minnesota, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,193. It is the county seat of Kanabec County6.

The county name is the derivative of an Indian term described as "snake". Major ancestry groups in Kanabec County are German, Swedish and Norwegian.

Among other things, the city of Mora plays host to the Mora Vasaloppet (Which is the sister city's ski race that was allowed to be copied in Mora, MN), the largest ski race in Minnesota, as well as the Snake River Canoe Race, the Mora Half-Marathon, and the Mora Bicycle Tour.

Mora is also the home of a gigantic Dala horse, which commemorates the town's Swedish roots. Mora's sister city is Mora, Sweden.
