Write in your own style
62How I developed my style
OK I need to talk a bit about my past. I grew up in England where at the age of thirteen you are to study either science or humanities (called arts in England). I studied science and given my atrocious spelling (dyslexic - or dixlecis as I would see it) and awful handwriting (way before students even had typewriters let alone computers) my writing was considered not worth looking at.
I studied chemistry, biochemistry and brain sciences. Later I was a software engineer for many, many years. Later I took clases in fiction writing and script writing at UCLA extension. The teachers were professional writers and script writers, producers and so on.
The surprising thing is that my teachers liked my writing style. Even so I had a very low self esteem in writing and I still do but I don't allow that to bother me and I write whatever I want to....
Why should you develop your own voice?
I have studied a lot of marketing materials (like most people in Internet marketing) and a lot make sense but I don't follow. One thing that I did learn is a marketing guru (I don't even remember his name - but I do remember his suggestion) said, that you should develop your own unique voice.
Another said don't be a pringle (me too, me too - same as everyone else).
Others say the same thing by talking about your USP (unique selling proposition).
Let's face it there's so much information on Internet that the chances of your factual content being unique is extremely low (especially if you got all your information online or from books - which let's face it most of us do for our blogs, HubPages, articles and so on).
So what's left to make your writing unique?
Your own unique style.

A little about my style
Let's face it one the reasons we write HubPages, Free blogs, article and so on is to give ourselves backlinks. So here is an opportunity for me to do both.
I was thinking about me voice. I suppose I like to write in a quite casual way. I like to have little jokes in my writing (and I write long sentences with plenty of parenthesises and ellipses)....
To see an example of my writing check this post on red eyes.
Oh, yes, at times I write these super long sentence which go on and on - not caring about correct grammar - syntax - and of course I do my own punctuation, and select.... Oh, to hell to it.
Actually you can't force your style. I was trying to demonstrate my style and that in itself stopped it but who cares about my style. The point is for you to be yourself. If anything push your style to its limits.
Trust yourself. Do not edit in the first draft - you could even be an idiot like me who doesn't edit in the second and third draft. But definitely leave the critic behind in that first draft. Write as fast as possible and don't let thinking get in your way....
