Samoan Islands

Most people don't know much about the Samoan Islands.. hell most people don't know it even exists and that is a shame. It is a jewel sitting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean south west of Hawai'i. I visited two different islands and I was able to soak in the wonderful culture thanks to one of my friends, who was also my tour guide.

Infact, most people don't even know that Pago Pago, American Samoa is a territory of the United States of America. When we first arrived we could see the vast trees on the hills surrounding the village. It was breath-taking! We walked around town going to these little shops and flea markets. Everyone was really wonderful. I bought these cute little sandels for $5 that lasted me 4 years (which is pretty good to me)! I also purchased a lava lava (like a sarong) and I was taught how to wear it properly in it's many fashions. I was also surpised to see men wearing them as well. I paid using American money which was really nice! We traveled up to see Mt.Alava which gave a beatiful view of the harbor and town! An interesting fact is they used to be able to ride a tram to go to the top of the mountain, but I guess they had a plane crash into the cables during a Flag Day celebration back in the 90s. :)

I also got to visit Western Samoa! Now this place is absolutely beautiful and not americanized at all! When we first arrived our first stop was the bank to switch out our money. They use tala (paper money) and sene (coins). Thier money is so pretty and vibrant in color! Then we walked around the village. It was amazing looking at the huts and the people were fasinating! I had a traditional meal most of which I enjoyed throughly like the baked taro and lots of coconut! I was so surprised to find a bell ringing in the background and I watched everyone stop what they were doing and they would kneel and pray. I was told that I wasn't allowed to talk or even walk when this happened. I don't think I would have...it was so amazing to see them rich in culture w/o western society butting in!

First one is Pago Pago, The Second one is Western Samoa

Very interesting, thanks! I once knew someone who pretended to be from the Samoan Islands, it was awkward when we caught him in the lie...but, I would love to visit, sounds like quite the experience.
