Short Story Ideas
Creative Writing Prompt 1
Your character lives in a world where you must have a permit to bear children. Consequences for illegitimate children: severe
Creative Writing Prompt 2
Your mother (brother/sister/girlfriend/father) is on trial for a crime that you committed. What was the crime? Did they take the rap or did you frame them? Do they know you did it?
Creative Writing Prompt 3
It's been raining for over two months straight. It starts raining harder every day and your city (the world?) is flooding.
Creative Writing Prompt 4
Your character is traveling across the country and your plane needs to stop for an emergency refuel. You find out something more serious is wrong with the plane and you have to stay overnight. You decide to just stay perpetually in the town you land. What happens?
Creative Writing Prompt 5
Your character moves from the mainstream world to an Amish town to become part of the culture. With the help of the Amish your character starts a country-wide revolution to eliminate all the progress of modern day society.
Creative Writing Prompt 6
Your character works as a telephone call screener for the CIA-- their job is simply to listen to people's calls. What do they hear? What adventures can spawn from that?
Creative Writing Prompt 7
It's the 1700s in England. Some kind of menace (use your creativity there) is stealing children from their homes. Your main character is an eleven year old boy. How does he react? Does he get taken? What does he do?
Creative Writing Prompt 8
Your character's job is to sell knives (or something else) door to door. Who does he meet? What encounters does he have? Does he get into trouble?
Creative Writing Prompt 9
Take a story you've already written. Write a new version that includes a new character-- one is deeply involved with your main character. This new character knows a secret about your main character. What is it? Do they blackmail the main character?
Creative Writing Prompt 10
Your character attempts to purchase alcohol at a store. They scan your ID and discover that you are wanted for a crime. Your character is unaware of what's going on considering they haven't committed a crime. How does the clerk respond? What happens next?
Creative Writing Prompt 11
Take a person that you are very close with and construct a character that is the exact opposite of that person. In your next story, write about you meeting/interacting/having some kind of relationship with this person.
Creative Writing Prompt 12
Your main character has recently found himself/herself either jobless or homeless or both. In their boredom they develop a perverse need to mess with other people by breaking into homes and rearranging furniture and belongings.
Creative Writing Prompt 13
Your character accidentally takes the wrong highway on a long road trip and ends up heading in the very wrong direction. They are lost and without a proper map. (Sounds like a pretty forgetful/not so bright character to me). What do they do? How do they find their way home/to wherever they were going?
Creative Writing Prompt 14
A very serious pandemic virus has struck the world. Your character has been helping to bring others back to health and he is one of the few still unaffected until he discovers that he too has contracted the illness. To avoid infecting his family he leaves town-- what does he do? What does he encounter?
Creative Writing Prompt 15
Your character is a little person who has started riding dogs (like horses). Your character starts an underground dog racing league for other little people. Races take place in an abandoned warehouse or some kind of basement. What happens?

I like the flood scenario and I've always wanted to run off to an Amish colony because I look pretty good in black.
I've had more problems writing college papers rather than works of fiction throughout the course of my life. Fiction is just easier for me and so are works of non-fiction, especially personal accounts. I find that by simply picking up a book and reading it gets my creative juices flowing. I get a ton of ideas from doing so.
I really hope that you use some of these ideas to your benefit. Thanks for the ideas as I'll forward to more of your hubs and reading your pieces. Good luck!
I like your creative strategies of writing. It makes it fun! :)

I am happy to say it has never happened to me. Ever. I reckon I might be an oddball. A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament. I put all my genius into my life and I put only my talent into my works. Beauty is everywhere, and everywhere is a song. So sing dear.
