Writing A Great Online Book Review, Tips And Hints
65hints and tips
I was asked for hints and tips on writting a great online book review, and heres the answers that I have for this question.
Reviews can be short or long depending on the book or books.
- Author - You want to be sure to mention the author and give your readers your opinion of the authors writing. You don't have to have a long description of the author, but besure to let your readers know if they author is talented or boring, even though you may have enjoyed the book some people might night be able to come up with the mind images unless the author sets the images for you. for example I wrote before about Laurell K. Hamilton and her books, when she writes about a certian charater or scene she explains things in detail so that way as you're reading the image is putting it's self together in your head. But some authors like S.P. Somtow (who wrote Vanitas: Escape from Vampire Junction) doesn't exactly give much detail to each person and jumps around in the book a lot, which can make things confusing for some people.
- Be Enthusiastic - Whether you liked the book or not you want to try and be enthusiastic about what your writing. You don't want your readers to stop reading what you wrote about the book because you were bored with the book, people enjoy reading reviews but only if the reviews aren't boring, and the more enthusiastic you are about your opinion the more the read of the review is either going to want to read the book or not read it.
- Give Detail but Don't give the Story - It's not your job to tell the reader the entire book, if you enjoyed the book and you want people to read it, then give them the idea but don't give anything away, you don't want to ruin the book for your review readers, you want them to read the book without knowing all the details so it is just as fun for them reading it as it was for you when you first read it, if it's a book in a serise then let them know a little bit about the main characters, for instance Anita Blake, from Laurell K. Hamiltons Vampire Serise, is a Zombie raising tought chick who slays vampires for a living, is tougher then a lot of guys, but still has that emotional female side. Plus the books are set in the same time as we are just with the fantasy added, the books are filled with politics, love, hate, gore, torture, everything you could think of and the story seems to only get better.
- Don't Be hateful - just because you may have not liked a book you read you don't want to sound like a jerk, so don't start ranting and raving or cussing because you "hated" the book, explain why you didn't like it but show some respect, because obviously someone had to have liked the book otherwise it wouldn't have been published, but everyone has the right to their own opinion, it just sounds more sophisticated if you aren't being a jerk about it. You want people to listen to you not disregard what you right. Plus remember someone could write a review on your review and you don't want the bad ratings.
- Don't Forget - ALWAYS write the name of the book and the author otherwise people wont know what you're talking about and thats what you want them to know, plus you didn't write the book and you need to make sure the author is given credit whether you liked it or not, this one is the biggest thing to remember to do.
Other then that just be yourself let people feel your emotions don't be dull let them know what you thought in a respectful manner and invite them to come back and read more reviews. Ask them to also return if they do read the books to let you know what they thought. Opinions from everyone help you become a better writer, and keep reading! If you don't read a lot, then a book review shouldn't be one of your things, you need to have an open mind and read the books that you may not generaly like cause you never know it could change how you feel about other things as well. Have fun to, it is just an opinion and it's you writing.
Hope this helps goodluck with writing your book reviews. Anyother request send them my way! Thank you for asking me to do the hints and tips on writing a great online book review!

I like reading advice like this. You've summed up some key points for writing a good book review. It's easy to give away the plot when you are being enthusiastic about the story or author. I often describe key plot points in my children's books but try to never give away a surprise ending. For adult and young adult books, spoiling the story can can scare away potential readers of your book.
