Writing For Traffic

Examining what is 'content' that drives traffic to a website

If you have ever built a website then you know you need good content--which means good writing. The whole idea is to capture the interest of whomsoever lands on your website, hopefully within the first few sentences. Forget Flash effects, videos, and slideshows....well, not entirely, but don't bother with them on the Home page. Why? Because those things take forever to load and may not work at all if someone has dialup (yes, many still do) or a slow service.

What is most effective is a cool-looking template that makes the viewer want to pause and check it out a bit, followed by some eye-grabbing content that sparks their interest. Basically, you want your content to reach off the page, grab the reader by the eyeballs and reel 'em on in. You want that "hey, this is pretty nifty" response ASAP. THEN you can lead them to your other (flashy) pages by asking if they would like more information on wacky-widgets-that-psychically -guess-their-favorite-song-and-play-it-for-them-if-they-click-here, or whatever.

For die-hard Flash enthusiasts who just gotta have their Flash intro, I suggest the Home page gives the viewer a choice of loading either the standard version or the Flash version. That way, if they have a high-speed connection, they can wail on the Flash and groove on your choice of a really awesome website, Dude...and you don't drive away potential customers who are still stuck in the dialup mode.

Back to the content; the really important part of your website AND any articles you publish to the web. Great content is something that gets the point across quickly, easily, and in a fun manner. Giving away tips (useful information)--but not all of the information--is a great way to get someone to click through to your website from an article you have written. This is the Holy Grail of website Traffic Generation. If you add your url somewhere in the article, like this; "for more information go to http://www.PrecisionAdLink.com " you might get some hits immediately, because people like the way you write. They might even hire you to write some for them (hint, hint).

What's even better is when the article you have written is so amazingly helpful, shocking, or downright funny that it gets copied and sent to people all over the world (ahhhh...viral marketing...drool, drool). This not only gets your article read but also drives a whole bunch of traffic to your waiting Squeeze Page, which is something I'll discuss at another time.

For instance, you might decide that this little article lays out some basics pretty well and makes this whole writing content thing a little more clear for you. Then you decide that about 200 people in one of your internet chat groups might like it, so you copy it and post it. Out of that 200, maybe 47 people decide to check out the website, and maybe four people buy something there. While it might seem like a lot of work to get just four people, what you got is four people who are really interested in your website and what you have to offer. Might I also point out that those are four people you previously did not have access to?

Now are you getting a little more excited about writing good content and generating traffic?
