Writing Sites I Have Known and Loved
76I think I have tried every writing site on the Internet at one time or another. Some have come and gone; some have gotten larger and stronger. Here are a few that I have sampled. I am still writing at most of them.
I have published mostly photographs here. They are published on the site Picable.com. Most articles are posted to Socyberty.com. They also accept audio and video. You are paid by how many views your content receives. I haven't figured out yet how many views you need to earn one cent. You get paid through PayPal once the total earned adds up to 50 cents or more. I have gotten paid in the past so it is a legitimate site.
I have posted several articles at Helium. One of my articles was sold to a publisher through their Marketplace. You can basically write about whatever you wish at Helium, they also accept fiction. They have a peer review system that helps quality articles to rise to the top. Articles are rated numerically. Helium occasionally has contests in which you can win money. You get paid through PayPal when you earn at least $25. One thing you should know is that your articles will be there forever. You can't delete them yourself.
I have a couple of blogs here. Anyone can set up a blog. Earniings are through AdSense. I have yet to earn any money here. Some of the blogs here are better than others. If the editors think you have some talent, they will ask if you want to take over any of their blogs with their own domain. There is a supportive community of bloggers here.
I have written seven articles here so far. Each article must be submitted and reviewed by an editor. If they don't feel it is up to site standards they will ask you to make changes. The articles on this site are mostly written in the same format; a numbered list of steps is expected. You get paid through AdSense and HowToDoThings gets 50% of your earnings. Of all my sites with AdSense, this is the one that has earned me the most.
I occasionally post articles here. You earn points for articles, photographs, videos, commenting on content and rating content. Since I am in Canada, while I earn points, I can't cash those points in for rewards. The rewards consist of gift cards or charitable donations. I have met some very friendly people here and it is a great site discussions of all kind.
I used to write here in the early 00s. I was the writer for Shakespeare on Film. I never did earn anything there then. However, I am writing there as a contributing writer now. You are paid through AdSense and get a cut of the sites income. They have a stringent application process; you have to submit two quality articles you have written and give them a list of sites you have written for. It is a very supportive community and there is help and training for writers. You are expected to post 10 articles in 3 months. After 3 months you can apply to be a featured writer in your chosen topic. According to Suite101, they receive over 7 million visitors a month to the site.
I've been writing at HubPages now for 6 weeks and have written 14 hubs. I have made about 50 cents through AdSense. I've yet to sell anything from Amazon or Ebay. I find it a very supportive and friendly place to write. I love playing around with the hub capsules.

Well, I'm still pretty new to HubPages and have only made a few cents. So far, it's the friendliest and I love the capsules idea :)
I have been meaning to try Helium at the suggestion of a relative, but I have been so preoccupied with HubPages and my own blog, I haven't had time. Would you recomment it more as a hobby, to get published or possible income. I love HubPages, I consider it my hobby, so I would trade it for another, but I might supplement it if it was worth it.
Great hub, by the way.
I view them all as hobby sites right now; more practice for my writing than a possible career. I do concentrate on writing in the Marketplace to try and sell more articles. It also does get you some notice and people on that site have gotten offered writing jobs.
What hubs sites you know also?
1. Squidoo
I am currently writing an article (for a print publication) that is encouraging librarians to "sell themselves" via writing sites. I am therefore delighted that you have written this hub and mentioned a few sites that are new to me. Thanks.
Great hub Susan! thanks for sharing your experiences here.
Peter! If you're interested in Helium you should check out Marisa Wrights hub. She has put together all the ups & downs of Helium.
regards Zsuzsy
Thanks, UW. Thank you Zsuzsy. I actually read Marissa's hub on Helium...it's funny checking out hubs on Helium. I would only do it for additional exposure, provided it didn't cut into my hubbing. Thanks, again. UW.
I myself have done best on hubpages, but helium is good too--here is another good one:
Thanks Froggy, being Canadian I can't earn money at Associated Content. But, it looks like a good one.
Great hub, Susan. There are a couple of places in here I hadn't heard of, so I'm going to check them out, thx for this.
By the way, I live about 45 minutes away from you, in Hamilton.
Thanks for the info, I've been wanting to check these out for a while now. I wonder how it will compare to hubpages since this is the only place I've ever submitted to, with the exception of one squidoo, which doesn't even touch Hubpages by a mile.
Thanks for sharing these sites with us.
Everytime i come to know about different sites by different people.you als o added some that i didnot know before.Which place you found the best for writing.thanks
To make real money with any of these, you need to bookmark and link to your content. This is a great list, however, and details some sites I wasn't aware of.
Thanks for the writing sites and your experience with each of them. Great hub.
Great hub. Great list. THanks! I like your idea of "hobby", writing and posting for practice first, money second. That's my strategy, too. CHeers!
thanks for the list. associated content is a favorite of mine, but Im going to check out that Triond one you recommended. ; )
nice info--I have tried Triond too, and I might check out some of the others :)
Thanks so much. I had no idea and am excited to check them out!
There are so many writing sites around. I guess it pays to have people share about them or else I would never hear about it in the first place. :-)
thanks for the info, and thanks for answering my question. I guess i should have thought harder about my username before implementing it. oh well, so is the personality of 'me'...impatient. thanks again, like reading your stuff!
Great resources and writing sites. I just began on a new site, How Hub at: http://www.howhub.com/juliemcm-invite/.
I also write on Triond and eHow.com. So far, my biggest earner has been eHow.
Thank you for this hub. It's a great resource to have, I'm new at all of this so it's good to hear from someone who's a bit more experienced!
Cool hub. I hadn't heard of a few of these and will check them out. I find that my biggest challenge is figuring out where best to budget my time. There are so many sites and I can't write for all of them. So far I mostly end up at Hub Pages and Elance but I'd like to get a blog going and figure out how to make use of the article directories. Found this through your forum post--thanks!
Thanks I'll be sure to check these out!

I am interested to know how Hubpages ranks in this list, in you own opinion of course. Thanks for all the information.
