There are many who believe that money can not be made at Helium. However, there are others who know that isn't true. It takes time, effort, and a desire to make it happen in order for it to really happen. But with a little work, understanding the system, and knowning when to sit back you can be making a nice passive income.

Writing at Helium

Writing at Helium is often easy to do. They provide you with topics, subtopics, and even titles. Because the system is set up for multiple articles under the same title, you only have to find a title that you know something about and then write the article. The article has to be 350 words or more, but it is recommended that it be 400 words or more.

As long as you stick with topics you know and love you can whip out articles in fifteen to twenty minutes of your time. There are plenty of articles in topics that you know and love. It is best to stick with them.

Helium Money Making Tips

1. Write What You Know

2. Write Quality Articles

3. Write a Lot

4. Rate

5. Use the Contests and Marketplace

Rating at Helium

Helium's system is set up so that the articles are rated by other writers. Many people have an issue with it as they watch their number one articles fall dramatically. I get frustrated with the rating system in general, however it is part of the system. I try to rate two articles every time I write one. Rating articles helps get your articles rated. So, it is important to maintain at least a little bit of rating in there with your writing.

The Math

At first glance there are many who aren't happy with the math. They get a few pennies to a dollar for each article each month. Some articles don't make any money some months. However, over time these articles continue to make money. Ideally Helium will be around for many years to come and the writers will be making money with each of their articles for that entire time. However, we can't guarentee that this is going to happen.

If you are wanting to make money while staying at home (or going outside your home, but not to work) or you are wanting to make a living writing this is a good option. As a freelance writer you would have to spend more time on your articles, write cover letters, and work hard to get your articles published. This way you can write what you want and make money doing it, quickly, with little time investement, and no outside investment (such as stamps and printing costs).

Contests and the Marketplace

You can increase your earnings by writing for contests (if you win) and the marketplace (if your articles are accepted). For the contests you are given a certain number of titles, usually 25. You write for as many of them as you can. Then you get rated and make or loose points according to your article ratings. First place is $75, second $25, third $10, and fourth through sixth $5. In addition to your earnings you make the same performance pay that you would normally make for each article you have written.

The marketplace is a place where real publishers are looking for specific articles. They write out the assignment and authors write the articles. You make some money while the publisher decides. If selected you are paid for your article (amount disclosed in assignment).

Also, there are times when publishers purchase your article out of the blue. I had one such event happen. My article continues to make money on Helium and it was purchased by another company, which I was paid for.

Making money one Helium can be done. It takes time, effort, and will. Once you have a large enough article base to get the amount of money you desire each month you can sit back and watch the money come in. It is a good idea to write a little each month and to rate a little each month because this keeps your profile fresher.

However, to remain active on Helium you only have to write once every 180 days! You can go on vacation, take a break, and come back much later. Each month you still make money off of the articles that are already there.

How about sharing details of your earnings with us? How much is your passive income and how many articles do you need to achieve that? According to my research, most people are averaging about 10c per article per month. I'd love to hear from people who are doing significantly better than that.

Of course, Marketplace and contests can make a dramatic difference but they do require more work.

I make about ten to fifteen cents an article. Except those that work the marketplace and contests a lot I doubt that there are many making anything more then that. However, Helium does run things like the 2008 Write Rate Reward-athon where they are paying those who have three rating stars and at least one writing star 1-3 dollars an article. Most of my articles have (and are) being written during this time. I will make about $1500 off of the reward-athon.

For additional reasons why I think it is worth it as well as how much money I am making visit: http://hubpages.com/hub/Understanding-the-Benefits

Thanks Aiden, I didn't notice your reply till now. Your experience is normal. Have you ever stopped to work out what that works out to per article, even if your articles go on earning for five years?

I too wrote a few articles for the Rewardathon - until I stopped and asked myself why I was getting so excited about being paid $2 for an article. It just goes to show how Helium conditions us to think that pennies is what we're worth.

What's interesting is that people are complaining regular income has plummeted since the Rewardathon, so it sounds like it will all even out, anyway.

I have been a member for about a year and a bit and am making great money at Helium. It really is possible, and I am also helping developing writers to make money too. It's a long term investment but what many people forget is that if you have great highly rated articles, what happens is that these continue to pay for ever, which is a much better reward than on sites which give a one off payment. I run a review writers site and have been a professional internet writer for years, though what I found at Helium is absolutely unique. Feel free to call on me if anyone reads this and gets a little lost, as the voyage and the patience really does pay off.

It's worth bearing a couple of things in mind when reading Rachel's post. First, she has written 1,321 articles (think for a minute how long that took!). Second, she is a highly experienced writer who is able to win contests and Marketplace regularly, which contributes significantly to her earnings.
