Writing for Helium is... ok
57Helium is a very interesting place.
On Helium (which refers to itself as a "citizen journalism outlet"), you write about anything worth informing people about. There are different categories and topics, and you get rated for what you write. There are preselected topics to choose from, and you have to write on one of those topics, and often, articles need to be a certain length.
Sometimes what you write is pitted against other people's writing on the same or a similar topic, Article A vs Article B, and a reader chooses which is "more valuable" and moves on to another topic. It's like a little debate where you choose your side and argue for it.
You can give praise to certain writers, send invites, join and explore the community, and more. Reader ratings determine the article's rank, and readers get little stars to show how active they are in ranking.
Basically, the purpose of Helium is to learn and share what you've learned, as a place where writers unite and network. You thrive on competition (how American). It's a neat concept.
Another part of Helium is the money, which is actually what attracted me to it. They advertise about a lot of different financial opportunities on Helium, from jobs to contests. You can earn money for the articles you write, so long as you write according to Helium's standards. It almost reminds me of HubPages. However, you can donate earnings to one of a wealth of organizations.
I've never encountered any problems with Helium, such as by getting earnings or submitting articles. However, I fear I haven't been active enough with it. I should have written more articles, but I got discouraged when I didn't earn any money. I would encourage people to keep writing articles, and who knows! I didn't do anything with my account for months and still got a few bucks.
- My Experience Writing for Helium
Helium is a website that invites writers to contribute articles on just about any subject. They don't pay you up front for your articles. Rather, you earn money from your articles based on how many people view them.

I am new to both HubPages and Helium but I am enjoying both. HubPages seems easier to get into. As for Helium, I entered a couple of contests and I am still trying to figure out what I am doing there.
Helium is a great place to write. I have earnt a few dollars there by entering contests. and it is an ongoing earning thing. As long as you are continually writing a few articles there.
They cover all sorts of articles too.
I have to say that I am not a real big fan of Helium. I write for Hubpages, ActiveRain RealEstate Network, PayPerPost, Today.com, SocialSpark, and an array of others and even Helium and I have to say that helium is my least favorite of all that I write for.
I haven't heard of most of the sites mentioned by Dannibo and I'd love to know what their earnings potential is. Personally, I found Helium to pay a fraction of what HubPages does, and I have much more control over my work here. Helium keeps your articles forever, even if you leave the site.

Helium is a nice place to write. I started there just last December of 2007 and there were some difficult times that I don't understand their criteria for rejecting or asking an article to be re-written. Sometimes it is just plainly the category. I've been earning from my posts there. I have not won any contest though. If you don't mind please take a look at my articles at http://www.helium.com/users/358304 .
