Wynn Las Vegas
61Wynn Las Vegas
Wynn Las Vegas is on 215 acres in the vicinity of the now demolished Desert Inn. A second tower, Encore at Wynn, opened in December 2008; three and a half years after the opening of Wynn.
The "Wynn Twynns"
Steve Wynn is known for building ultra luxurious properties. After his beginning in the world of gambling at a Maryland bingo parlor (no joke!) he bought a portion of the Frontier Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas strip (which was demolished in 2006). Frontier was never a luxury property but Wynn bought a majority share in the Golden Nugget in 1971 and renovated it to a new level, creating the first upscale resort property in downtown Las Vegas (Fremont Street.)
Encore at Wynn Las Vegas
Following the remodeling of Golden Nugget, Wynn moved his projects over to the Las Vegas Strip; starting with Mirage in 1989, followed by Treasure Island, followed by Bellagio. These properties were sold to MGM Mirage (who then sold Treasure Island to Phil Ruffin in December 2008 for $775 million.) Wynn had also acquired the Desert Inn property at some point, and demolished it to make room for the Wynn resort, which was conceived in 2002 and opened in April 2005.
Encore & Wynn
Encore at Wynn opened December 22, 2008. Wynn and Encore are located just north of the Venetian and Palazzo, making this the only area of the Las Vegas strip where you'll find four ultra luxurious resort properties in close proximity. This may change with the opening of the MGM Mirage CityCenter.
The first time I visited Wynn, I felt as if I'd been transported to an alternate universe. While the structure is somewhat plain looking from the outside... kind of a brown rectangle... the grounds and interior are like three dimensional works of art. Room photos on their web site are impressive as well. I highly recommend Wynn and Encore if you enjoy luxury with a clean, modern, linear design. If you prefer the European Renaissance style then try Venetian, Bellagio, or Palazzo.
