X-Box Repair FAQ for the First-Time Owner

Read on and see if there's still a chance for your X-box to benefit from a little DIY tinkering.

It's the DVD's fault!

Having the Dirty Disc Error isn't the only instance that your DVD could be at fault. If your games end up freezing then you could blame that on your DVD as well.

Your first instinct may be to get a new replacement drive and yes, that's the simplest thing to do but it's also going to cost you money. If you can't afford changing just yet then here's what you can do. Start with your typical DVD cleaner. This can be used for cleaning the lens. Once you're done, try rebooting your X-Box and see if there's any improvement.

Take out your manual and whatever tutorial you can find to see what else you can do that the manufacturer has approved of. If that still doesn't work then consider cleaning the lens of your DVD drive manually. Be careful not to exert too much pressure or scratch its surface or that will truly be the end of your X-Box. Try adjusting the potentiometer as well.

Now, if replacement is the only way to save your X-box then go ahead but this time, do invest in a high-quality DVD drive so you won't have to go through the same thing in the future.

Another possible problem with DVD drives is its inability to play certain games. Most cases, this is simply due to the media used.

Some games use DVD while others are on CD. Although CDs are easier to read, DVDs have better quality and resistance to scratches and other kinds of harm. Make sure that your DVD drive is truly capable of reading whatever media your game is stored in.

Lastly, are you experiencing difficulties with opening and closing your DVD drive? If so, try realigning the tray first. A lot of people overlook this possibility and immediately jump to unnecessarily expensive solutions.

Other Possible Error Codes You'll Encounter with Your X-Box

One of the most troublesome errors you'll encounter is the "Call Customer Service with No Error Number".

When this one crops up, it simply means that the error is part of the list of errors your X-Box recognizes; it just doesn't know which one is it.

Bootldr errors may have to do something with your X-Box's motherboard, HDD, or RAM. Kernel errors, on the other hand, may have something to do with the HDD as well. If not that, it could be a problem with the DVD or dashboard.

There may come a time that you'll realize you need to open your X-Box. Think carefully about this: once you open your X-box, there's no turning back. It means completely ruining any chances of sending your X-box to Microsoft and having them repair it for you. There's no chance to claim your warranty after it.

DIY repair with X-Box is a good thing, but it can be bad if you ignore common sense and insist on experimenting with things best left to the professionals. Be honest with your X-box: if you're not the doctor it really needs, bring it to the hospital---err, the repair shop pronto!
