Xbox 360 Controller Repair - Do It Yourself

Do you have dead or sticky buttons on your Xbox 360 controller? With a few basic tools you can repair it yourself.

Nothing is more annoying then missing a shot or getting killed because you have dead buttons. Don't throw your controlled across the room, fix it.

Start by grabbing a Phillips screwdriver. Flip your controller over and remove the 7 screws holding your controller together. Flip it right side up and remove the top cover. Don't panic if it looks like everything just fell apart.

Remove all the buttons and rubber pads they are sitting on. It is a good idea to lay them out on the floor or table, what ever you are working on, in the same pattern as they go in your controller. Makes it easier when you are trying to figure out what color goes where. You could also draw yourself a diagram before you remove the buttons.

You will probably notice that the board and buttons are sticky. Wash all the rubber pads in mild soapy water. Dishwashing soap works well. If the board is really bad wash it too. If it does not look too bad you can get some cotton swabs and some rubbing alcohol and clean the contacts that the rubber pads were sitting on.

Make sure everything is completely clean and dry. Turn your top cover over and start replacing your buttons. They should be keyed so they can only go in one way. Next put the rubber pads back in place on top of the buttons. At this point you still have the top cover inverted.

Re-install the bottom cover and install the screws. Check your buttons to make sure they all move freely. Plug it back in and it should now work as good as new.

On the newer xbox 360 controlers they switched to a torx screw. You can buy a set of these almost anywhere now.

on my cord controller my anolog stick the bottom right one like moves on its own like i have to push down on it to keep it in one place but like when i go to move it, its like theres no force for the anolog to push agianst so it just swings to the direction really fast. so basically what im saying is the anolog the bottom right one is broke do u know how to fix this problem

Heath  says:

The screws on the back are tamper proof torque bits, so the philips is completely useless on them

Go to your local hardware store or Walmart and get a cheap set of Torx bit screwdrivers or a kit

they run around $5 for a set. Good to have aroung the house anyways.

This is not a comment but a question I am trying to find someone company that has the know how to rewire and Xbox360 wireless controller. I'm trying to find someone who knows how to switch the two sticks making left right and Wright left.

I learned to play games on flight controls simulators and cannot get my brain to work any other way.

Please advise

Yesterday I dropped my Wireless Controller and now my Right Bumper button won't work right. Should I take it apart and attempt to fix it? It's not sticking out as far as the Left Bumper. How would I go about this?

Magooo  says:

Yes you are going to have to take it apart and see why, You will probably find that the board came loose

Christina  says:

I have a x-box 360 controller, and the battery pack is messed up every time you turn it a certain way or move it to fast or you go to shoot someone the controller dies. I tried the battery pack in one of my other controllers and the problem still happens so i know its not the controller itself. Do you know how i would go about fixing this problem without having to buy a new battery pack or controller?

Catlin  says:

The Lights on my Ace-edge joystick just keep flashing, first teh 1 and the 4 then all of them, thats all they do is flash, and none of the buttons respond does anyone know how to fix that, or if it can be fixed?I don't like playing AC6 with a controller it is not responsive enough for me, so I would really like to get it fixed, since finding a new one would be difficult at best.

Brian  says:

The right trigger on my 360 wireless controller has gone completely dead. It sometimes works, then most of the time it does nothing when pressed down.

I took it apart to see if it was dirty or contacts had come loose, only to find that its still connected, none of the peices are broken and it still springs back when pressed down.

But it still goes dead in the middle of games, or receives a singal for a moment, then goes absolutely dead. I've changed batteries, I've plugged in my plug and play power cord thinking the power source was responsible and it doesn't solve the problem.

All other buttons work fine, its just the one, and I'm getting frustrated and close to junking it and buying a new one, if anyone has any clue as to why this is happening I'd appreciate the input. Cause I REALLY don't wanna shell out the 40-50 bucks for a new one.

Dylan   says:

if you have a glitchy battery pack example : turns off randomly. or prees one buttion and others function too. th bstway around it is to buy a battery pack that is rechargable it comes with a wire for chariging and if the battery pack dosent work you can plug the wier in and it works as a wired controller. these are about £25

Just wanted to say thanks a lot, man. I was given an extra controller and via your guide I removed all the maple syrup that was in it.

Cheers.

answer to justin: you need to press the connect buttons on the console and the controller, its the small button on the front of the xbox and the real small button on top of the controller.

kieran  says:

i have a solution dont think it will help that mutch but still, if you drop your xbox 360 controller theres a 8 in ten chance that it will break and if that is the case then when you get it fixed get a piece of string about 8 inches long, and tie the string to your controller and make a loop tie around your rist or neck that way you can:

pick up your phone and do all sorts without it falling.hope this helped thanksbye

nic  says:

What works well is do all of what he said with cleaning it with toothpicks and q-tips or cotton balls but if you have a sticky button what works well is,take out the battery pack, fill a litttle cap or container with rubbing alcohol then dip a q-tip in it. fully soak the q-tip then dap it onto the button letting the alcohol run down the button down the sides. do this a few times while pushing the button in and out. repeat this untill the button no longer sticks

I've tried wiggling the plug and pulling it out and plugging it back in but nothing works..sometimes all four lights blink on the controller and other times it's just the 1 and 4. i changed the end of the plug and got the same thing. what is wrong???? Is the controller junk?? are the usb ports bad?? does that even happen?? i'm thinking that a wireless controller would work but i can't shell out $50 or $60 right now. can anybody help???

Okay so me and my husband sent in our x-box 360 to get fixed and once it return the console was working ine including the wireless controller, then two days later it started acting up. The controller wouldn't work the x was acting as the A (I was playing dynasty warriors empire and x is attack and a is jump) but he A wasn't doing anything. Anyways I turned off the x-box360 for the day and then went to bed the next day I turned on the xbox 360 witht he controllerr it was fine, I listened to music and everything was dandy, then i turned off the console for half of the day since it was my sons nap time, when later that day I tried to turn on the xbox 360 with the controller it wasn't working, we changed teh batteries and added new ones but it didn't work, so then I took out the battery pack and put the rechargeable pack and hooked it up to usb thing that charges the recharable battery pack and it didn't work, so then i noticed the light on the usb cable wasn't green it wasn't even on. How can I ix it? And why did it occur?

XXXhiddennameXXX  says:

ON my 360 wireless controller, the left stick isn't functioning up to scratch. When i push up or left, or diagonal upleft it either doesn't respond, or responds but as if i'm only pushing the stick halfway. even worse is when playing oblivion the character slowly walks right. it also means that i can barely move on vegas 1, 2 due to the slow pace on the game anyway. has anyone else had this problem, or know how to fix it. any help would be great.
