Xbox 360 repair is really not that hard if you take your time and follow some repair directions. Basic tools and some technical skill is required.
Are you one of the many unfortunate XBOXers receiving the dreaded XBOX "Red Ring of Death" error?
First of all if your Xbox is still under warranty take it back to the store for repair, Do not open it as this will void your warranty. If it is out of warranty then go ahead and repair it yourself.
About 6% of Xbox 360s that receive this error cannot be repaired. This means that you have a very good chance of saving your Xbox 360 console! Repair may require a few items from your local Radio Shack or hardware store. Chances are you already have these items.
Learning how to repair your XBox will save you some major money. Microsoft will not tell you how to fix these errors. They'll ask you to send your system back to them for repair. The typical cost for a repair can be as much as $140 plus shipping and handling. Also - they do not always guarantee a fix!
This guide will show you how to easily fix the 3 Red Light Error. I'll also cover over heating consoles, graphic errors, and freeze ups. the step by step repair guide is easy to understand, and will have you up and running in about an hour.
I have personally repaired 17 Xbox 360's with this guide with a 100% success rate. It includes easy to follow instructions including pictures of every step that is required. I am repairing them for friends and now the word is out and I am making some decent cash repairing Xbox's.
Here is How You Open Up Your Xbox
First you will need to open up your xbox without cracking the cover. The thing to remember is when you do it right it just pops apart, never pry or you will be very disappointed with the results
First things first remove the faceplate. If you skip this step and go on to removing the top and bottom plates you will find they can be removed but you greatly increase the difficulty and chances of breaking the little tabs off the top and bottom plates. The easiest way to remove the face is to use the finger hole at the bottom of the console and simply pull forward.
Starting with the gray bottom vent plate, six tabs that hold it into place. You will find that all of them are accessible from the sides through the vent holes. Gently pull up on the plate and simultaneously release the clips by pushing in with the opening tool or other tool that fits through the hole.
Start at the front of the case and work your way back alternating sides so each pair of tabs are released. Keep gentle pressure to pull it up and away as you go.
The top plate offers a bit more of a challenge 3 of the six tabs are not in plain sight, begin with the front two, they can be accessed from the two corresponding holes where the drive tray connects. The opening tool has a cut out so it fits just right to reach the two clips. The next two are visible through the vent holes and easily accessible. The final tab can be released by removing one of the Xbox feet at the rear to reveal a hole.
With the top and bottom vent covers removed we now lay the xbox down upside down. This makes the process much easier as the chassis is screwed to the top. With the bottom shell,pointing toward the sky we see these innocent looking 7 little holes.
Continue to spread the case apart and push in on the vent area, there are a couple more spots where the case connects but these are not clips and do not require the tool. When you press in nothing too impressive will happen but you may notice that the case spreads slightly further apart.
You should hear a series of more click clicks and the case is free. Spread the back apart a couple inches it should be able to rest open while you spin it arround to work on the front .
Lift the lid and you should now have the cover off.
I will add more to this series later but eventually you will need the complete Xbox 360 repair guide. One repair will more that cover the cost of the manual. This is the easiest guide to follow.

How To Remove A Stuck Game From Xbox 360
Halo 3 is stuck inside your Xbox 360 and you want to get it out. There is a way to manually remove it. First you will want to unplug the power for a few minutes to let your Xbox reset. Re-attach the power cord and see if you can now eject your DVD.
If that did not work turn the power off and unplug it. Remove the face plate on you Xbox console. You will need a thick paper clip or something similar. Straighten one end of it out. With the face plate removed you will see 2 small holes right underneath the DVD player and one hole to the right.
Since Xbox uses 3 different DVD drives the procedure will vary. If you have a Samsung or Toshiba drive use the small hole on the right. Should be right underneath the X on the DVD drive faceplate. Push your straightened paper clip in the hole until you feel it hit the gear. The gear needs to be spun from left to right. Poke around until you find it then push in gently until you feel it move. You will see the tray start to move out.
For Hitatchi DVD drives go for the first hole on the left. Beng DVD drives will use the middle hole. This requires the most pressure to get the gear to turn. You will see the tray start to move.
take your time and do not push too hard in case you are missing the correct spot. Once the tray starts to eject you can pull on it slightly to help it open. You should now be able to remove your Game.
Now why did your game get stuck in the first place? Could be a lot of different reasons. You may have to replace your DVD drive if you are having loading problems. See the guide before attempting this.

Hi, can you help with a disk tray problem. My xbox disk holder (the round disk seat spindle - or what ever you call it) seems to have gotten too hot and just broke/melted off. I mean I cant place the disk securely in the tray because the spindle disk holder thing broke off. I am decently technical and is there a way I can buy another one. Do you know where? Any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Hey man, got a problem with my 360. it turns on, i get all the green lights but no picture or sound. i thought it could have been my component cord so i bought a new one and that didnt work either... im thinking maybe a bad connection in the a/v output but im not sure, do u have any experience with this problem? or anything similar?
Gary, I had one with bad soldering on the jack, check that if you have it opened up. See if you get anything by jiggling it around. Also make sure you Tv is working, Try another source to double check.
Will, Make sure your disks are clean, If you open the unit up clean the lens with some rubbing alcohol make sure it is clean with no film left on it. (the lens for the pick up)
Hey, recently, my baby bro did something to my 360. No clue what, except now the disk holder tray wont go in without force. Also i gentley shook the console while trying to figure out whats wrong and theres a rattling noise O.o

Hard to say without seeing it. Could be a broken loading gear or it is out of timing. Some of the gears are mounted on plastic shafts.
Im having the same problem as will but it says unplayable disk for everything, and it seems like the disk isnt even spinning

my 360 has the green lights go on and then freezes when i hit the guide button. Also , it sometimes has 3 out of 4 lights on but they're red. the light where you see the second player is the one that is missing when the lights are red
also on the top if you lay it down like a regular X-BOX where it says x-box 360 it on top of the disk tray in the middle pops if you push a little bit like a poke and i don't now why that is happenig there was no pop before
The most common failure when you can not read disks or will not play disks is a bad pick up. You can replaces the DVD as a unit or if you have the skills to do so you can replace just the lens or pickup. Sometimes the spindle motor will go bad so if you are not sure I would replace the whole DVD unit.
im having a bit of bother with my 360 ,first thing i noticed was once i loaded a 360 disc i was getting message please insert a 360 disc,had to keep ejecting and retring until it loaded .then it started to freeze during games ,now it will only play one of my games and dvds.i have also notice a slight clicking noise,please can you help it would be very much appreciate it.
hey, ya when i put a disc into the tray it will be saying "reading disc" then suddenly it'll say "open tray". So should i clean the lens with rubbing alcohol?? please help out
Yes, Try cleaning the lens, Also make sure your discs are clean, You can wash them with mild soapy water from the center out, not in circles.
the other day i was installing my intercoller and when i pulled it out i found that it had pulled my power ports prongs out...i have no idea wat to do...im lost

I have seen a lot of bad solder joints on the xbox 360 video output jacks. If you open it up and look at the contacts closely you might see cracks around the contact. Re soldering usually fixes the problem.
My system will rarely play a game disk. It thinks they are DVD's and will tell me to play this disk put it in a xbox 360. The system also sounds like it's struggling with disks. On an unrelated problem, the disk tray doesn't always want eject.
I need some serious help getting my XBox repaired, it didn't get the red ring of death, and that's the only thing the warranty covers is those stupid red lights. You see the whole cable that connects from the tv to the 360, well the component that that cord plugs into is internally damaged inside the XBox and Microsoft wont do anything about it because they are anus ticklers. You will need to open up your xbox360 and replace the jacks that are damaged. Soldering is required. If you do not have the skills to change the jacks I would seek out someone that can.
You might be able to pull it apart and take it with a set of new jacks to your local TV repair shop and they should be able to solder them in for you.

hey. my video wont show up. the audio works fine and i can connect the controller fine too. so i bought a new av cable. still the video wont show up. but i have a fan that i plug into the av connection and it comes with its own av cables that have a unique green wire. i plug these av wires into the fan and straight into the tv and it shows up the video fine. but the fan doesnt allow wireless xbox live which is what i have. so my xbox cant use any av cables that plug into the regular connection????????? i need help understanding how to get my xbox to work with av cables that you plug into the original connection, not into the fan. my xbox 360 doesnt work in that sense. when i shake the console gently i can hear a little rattling. please, i beg u, please, do you know what to do????????????

You will have to open up your xbox 360 console and find out what is rattling around. That will tell you more.
I have been seeing cracked boards and bad solder joints around the AV connector. Both can be repaired. Look at the connector make sure nothing is bent.
Magoo I have the same problem as a guy above with the system not reading games disks correctly. It says their DVD's. Is it the lens? If so, is it easy to fix? I thought I had up to three years for repair, but I bought it 3/15/2006 and they want $100. That's too much

Tried to repair them before with no luck, even tried switching the internal disks to another case but it did not work.

Sounds like a bad cooling fan. Better check it out otherwise you will have over heating problems and get the 3 red light error.
Sometimes hard drives will make noise too.
Turn it upside down and listen for anything loose. something may be hitting the fan
hi, about a month ago my xbox stopped working. the picture went bad on me and no it wont work at all.. it turns on but i cant hear or see anything. i've looked into this and its the video encoder chip. can anyone help me out?!

If the video chip is bad you are better off replacing the mother board.
Changing the ic takes specialized equipment.

Ok, For no video, There are a few things that could be wrong.
If you can try another cable.
Some units have been getting bad contacts on the board where the video connector is soldered in. Re soldering may be reguired.
There have been bad or cold solder joints on the video output IC. The repair guide can help here or you can replace the entire motherboard.

hey my xbox 360 was playing yesterday, and now when i put a disk in it automatically comes back out. i repeated trying to get it in with the dash boar dbut nothing works! HELP!
When the disk ejects as soon as it goes in it is because it is not fully loading.
Either the loading gears have jumped a tooth and are now out of time or there is something jammed and keeping it from loading all the way.
Unplug it and shake it listen for loose pieces. Turn it upside down.
You will probally have to open up the console and take the DVD player apart to see what is going on inside.

I need to replace the dvd drive in my 360 and i know how to get it out and get the new one in, but do you have to flash the new one with a key or something? And if so, how do you do it?
If the DVD is an exact replacement it should work with no problem, just replace it.
If you are trying to use an off brand or one modified from a computer then that is a different story.
i recently got an xbox 360 givin to me. i tried some of the dumb steps you find on youtube (bad RAM chip conection, put rubber bumbers behind RAM chips. and replacing thurmal compound on CPU) none of those methodes worked. so i got mad and rented one from a rent to own shop (if somthing breaks you can take it back without having to pay for it) i just switched the mother board and DVD unit with the one in mine, it works like new

sweet thats what i thought but everywhere online says they wont accept returns on the drive because of having to flash it so i thought i would check. so if its a samsung drive in it then i just put a new samsung drive in it or are there different samsung models that i have to be careful of.
Better check with who ever you are buying from, It may need to be flashed if it is an after market replacement.
Most flashes are for hacking the drive so you can play copied DVD's
Some people are also selling computer DVD Drives.
No returns would worry me....
It depends on what is wrong with your drive but you could just replace the pick up assembly. A lot cheaper. Takes more skill to get into it though.
Downloaded latest update. Now I'm getting System Error E 65 and secondary code 1001. No warranty as case has been opened, but no modifiacations has been done. With no HDD attached it goes straight to the System Error, with HDD attached it boots for 2-3 seconds and then System Error appears. DVD drive is a Samsung MS25. Any tips?

I wish that would have worked. With the MS25 disconnected it boots up fine. I had some internet connection problems when the Xbox360 tried to download the update, had to try several times. Sending it in to a local guru now to see if the dvd key is still present. Fingers crossed.
I have an xbox 360, it just started having a serious problem. When Iturn it on for about 2 minutes it will automatically turn itself off and when I try to turn it on again and again it will turn itself off in a shorter amount of time. 4 Flashing Red Lights - AV cable can not be detected.
Make sure it is plugged in all the way.
Disconnect the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console.
Make sure none of your contacts are bent. Try cleaning the metal contacts on each end with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol
If the AV cable is correctly connected but the four red lights are still flashing, try a different AV cable if you have one available.

After reading all these problems everyone else is having, I have a new one. When I power up I have no video and no audio but I also get no red ring. That's just it, I don't get green indicators either, only the one in the middle (power indicator), as if it's not recognizing the controller. I tried both ports and also wireless with no success. I'm going to try replacing the A/V cable, but the other problem I got no clue about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My son knocked over the xbox the other day. Apparently the disk tray was open when it fell backwards. The entire tray popped out and I don't know if there is a way to put it back in. I tried just sliding it back in but there is too much resistance, I don't want to break it.

To re-install the tray you have to open the Xbox up and remove the DVD unit. Then take the DVD unit apart.
The tray rides on a track and is driven by gears. It has to be in the correct spot or the timing will be off. If it is off it will either not close or open all the way or your disk will not load.
It can be fixed but it requires a bit of work.

Look at your disks and see if they are getting scratched, they are probally rubbing.
If they are you have to adjust the hight of the spindle motor platform.

hi! my 360 rarely recognizes 360 games anymore. most of the time it pops up with a message saying "to play this disc, place in a xbox 360" or something along those lines. it plays dvd fine, no problem. i cant send it to microsoft, cause the case has been replaced with a clear case. it's kinda drivin me nuts. lol. i have the hdd on it, havent tried takin it off...i guess i'll try that tonight..i've tried about everything... right now my 360 is sittin with the case off so i could check out and see what was goin on. what usually happens is the laser will run to the outside of the disk, then back to the the inside really quick. then i get the message. any help would be greatly appreciated.

does anybody know what the spindle motor platform is and how i can fix it without sending it in. I am about to head off to deployment and im trying to get it fixed before i leave so i can have my brother play it while im gone for 7 months. thanks
The spindle motor is what spins the DVD around. If you take the DVD unit apart you will see the lens and the round metal platform the disk sits on.
If your DVD's are getting scratched you can get some more life out of your DVD unit by Very carefully prying the round metal platform that the DVD sits on up a tiny bit. Make sure you do not bend the shaft or raise it too far.
You will see that it is on a shaft that is driven by the motor. This will raise the hight and keep the DVD from dragging.
As they wear out the height changes.
You could just replaces they motor or the whole DVD unit.
If you don't feel confident trying this I would not reccommend it.

Hey, I have the same problem Jeremy from two weeks ago had. No audio or sound, and the controllers won't connect. I tried buying a new A/V cable and it didn't work. Also, when you shake the system a rattling sound can be heard. I'm opening it up to see the problem but if you have any ideas, please help.
Open it up and find out what is rattling, We will go from there.
my xbox360 is saying unplayable disk on all disk i put in it. I notice that the disk aren't spinning. Any help would help i have three kids screaming to play it.
Make sure your disks are clean
Unless your DVD unit has a really dirty lens the motor or pick up in the DVD unit is bad.
You could replace both but I would replace the whole DVD unit. Or have it done.
OK, so I had the ROD before, under warranty, got it repaired, pulled apart the case and painted it. About four months later, the dvd drive starts making some noise, more on some games than others. tried lens cleaning. one day it completely stopped reading. replaced the hitachi drive with one out of a 360 with another issue. the drive would read DVDs, but was unable to play any xbox game. Suspect of the drive still, I ordered a samsung, thinking it was the best replacement drive, installed it, and have the same results. DVDs are fine, no games. the rest of the 360 works fine. demos play, media center connects, Xbox live runs. no ring of death. any suggestions?
I opened it and dusted the inside. The controlers work but the A/V is still mest up. The rattling sound was this mettle piece thaat seems mechanical but i got no idea what it dose. I thisk it might be part of the disk drive but I cant be certain without looking at another one.
Hi, I'm having the same problem as Truman... DVD movies run fine but the 360 also thinks that games are dvd movies too... everything else works fine. I've tried a couple of different dvd drives as well - no joy
I had trouble when te drive stopped opening. Then the screen became garbled and froze. I opened the unit, got it to give back my disc and then it seemed to work again. It did the same thing again, so I got a new Toshiba replacement drive. Installed the drive and it seemed ok for a minute then it would not open and the screen garbled again. I have seen the 3 red lights more than one time, but they are intermittent. Does this sound like drive issues or is there something more major going on? Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm recieving one red light and an error message of "E 74" when I turn on my 360. I tried all of the suggestions listed on xbox.com/support , without success. What does this indicate about my 360 and how do I go about correcting/fixing it. I am also currently out-of-warranty, and i would also like to know if there is any possible way to acquire the 3 red lights of death (in the event that correcting the issue in question is out of reach), which would put me back in warranty.

Hey Magooo, my xbox 360 recently displayed the unreadable disc problem and since my warranty was already expired i took it apart to find out the problem. I learned that it was my Hitachi disk drive's spindle doesn't spin anymore. The laser is definitely doing something but the discs will only spin a little bit. My question is if I buy another disk drive that is the same model and everything, will I have to "flash" the drive or should it just be plug in and play? I definitely don't have the equipment for this "flashing" process that I've read on the internet so I'm wondering if it's necessary. Thanks for your time, Matt
Matt - I can't tell you that one for sure. I have had it work both ways. Most I replaced with no problem as long as they were a direct factory match.
It seems a lot of the replacements do have to be flashed. I would check with who ever you are buying the replacement from to be sure.
hey, i just bought a 360 on ebay, knowing it had a problem with the dvd drive. the drive itself works.. but it will only read one 360 game, and say the others to insert it into a 360 to play. so i was thinkign i might replace the laser or the drive. i know the drive is a Samsung TS-H943A, which i was going to buy the same for it. but i've heard that it needs flashing or new firmware.. and i don't know how i'd do that, so i was wondering what would be the best option? thanks.. email is papasmurf7676@aol.com.. any help would be nice

Hi Magooo, my xbox is haveing one red flashing light with the message "E74". Ive tried messing around with my AV cable like they said to do at microsoft support. I've have no way of spending 140 dollars to get it fixed. Is there a why to fix my xbox? Please help! Thank you for your time.
E74: AV cable error. There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem in rare cases it is the CPU.
Main board would have to be replaced if that is the case.

Sounds More like an overheating problem that anything else. Make sure it is getting enough ventilation, Try a fan blowing on it to see if it takes longer to act up then you will know.
Hey i replaced my case on my xbox 360 about 4 months ago... i have little brothers and they knocked it over so now the tray wouldnt open... took it apart and the tray worked fine.. put it back together and the tray wont open! so i know my problem but how do i fix it... when u put all the screws back in it wont open..so basically when the xbox is pushed down and all together the tray does not work. it just blinks once on the green light.. also can hear some rattling sounds... could it be something in there? like a grounding problem.. thx 4 your time
i have an idea for all of your guy's drives that won't read disks or have problems.. buy a new dvd drive the exact one you have try to get to the closest you can.. look on ebay, thry're cheapest there. when you get it, take both dvd drives apart. at the bottom you get the main board for it.. the green one.. take all the wires out of each one very carefuly! they can break kinda easy sometimes. switch the boards and the new drive will have the firmware form your 360 on it. it might work the first time.. might not, just toy around with it for a bit.. i just got 3 of them workign today by doing that. the one i brought from ebay and 2 others. it works very nice!

I have the same problem as many others. I get no video or audio from one day to the next. I heard it could be some update problem, but I havent recently updated my console so I dont think it was that. I purchased a new cable and thought it might be that. But that didnt work. Any idea what it could be. No rattling or any other symptons. It does power up. I even tried doing the sync and power up step but nothing. when it turns on it has a small bit of snow on the screen and then nothing , absolutley no sound whatsoever either. Please help.

I took the xbox apart and the dvd compartment. Then i tryed it, still doesnt work. I read one post and you had said something about the timing gear in the dvd, is there a way to fix this. My xbox 360 is experiecing general hardware failure (ring of death). I opened it up and replace the 4 chips on the motherboard with double sided taped and an eraser. After it work for a few minutes then went back to red lights. Then I opened again and looked at the GPU and CPU. The thermal paste on both were smolded so I cleaned it off and put on a new layer. That's when a new error occured. Now when I turn it on it still have red lights and the fans won't come on. How can I fix this? Do I just have to send it to Microsoft?

sometimes the system works without any problems, other times it will say that the disk is unreadable. it does this for several games however. still other times when i place the CD in the XBOX 360, a message will be displayed reading "please place this disk in an XBOX 360 console". any ideas how to fix this?

Iv found the problem to why my games wernt working after a while of playing them, its not an overheating problem because i bought a boost fan to clip on back and that didnt help, however i noticed sum scratches on the brand new game i was playin (assasins creed, AWESOME!) it turns out that is the problem sumhow my xbox was scratching the discs. i looked it all up on a search engine n found sumwhere that helped me to a solution. i tuk the xbox apart and stuck 4 rubber pads on the top casing of the dvd drive, this helps keep the disc level and therefore prevents scratchin. hope i can help people that are as mad as i was wen it wasnt working. search around to find a picture of how to arrange the rubber pads.

It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it, This can also be caused by a Hard Drive Eprom Error. When I place a disk in the tray and allow the Xbox to read it, when I open the tray the disk is in the same position. That leads me to the conclusion the spindle motor is not turning. Any electronic supply sore or Radio shack will carry belts. Many VCR belts are the same.
Check the soldering on your control connector for bad contacts.

Magoo, I was wondering if you have heard of a bad network card in the 360 itself, we had a lightning storm come through sat and it has not worked since. I hate to spend $100 to fix this system since I got it on release day. Plus, I have seen on here that none of your downloaded content will work when they send a diff unit out to you. I am sure you have answered these questions before, but I am starting to get lost in the proccess. My 360 was making really wierd noises (like a grinding sound) for about two months. It has been scratching all my disks. I thought maybe it was tilted but I moved it to a perfectly flat spot and it was still doing the same thing. I was just going to wait for the three lights to come, but this happened first. It will not read any of my disks. It just keeps coming up with the "to play this disk, put it in an xbox 360 console" message for all of my disks. It will allow me to get on the dashboard. Also, when I move it around there is a faint rattling sound. Do you have any idea of what is going on? Is it worth spending $100? Will they still fix it if I mess around with it? My warrenty has expired. I have limited knowledge about the console. Thanks

Hey, I am having the same problem as a person way back, my xbox 360 says to play a disc to put it in a 360 console. also the the tray struggles to open sometimes and it also sounds like it is struggling to read the discs. It does this to all games, but occassionally will work. I am no longer covered by warranty and would really like to fix this problem. Most Video Problems, in fact most Xbox 360 repair problems are from same thing, poor contacts for the IC's on the main board. 90 percent of all problems are caused by this.
The Xbox 360 repair guide will walk you through step by step on how to repair this.
This guide will fix most problems, unless you have a DVD mechanical drive problem like it won't load, disk is getting scratched, door won't close ect..
Some DVD read problems are caused by the bad IC contacts but it can also be a weak or bad laser in the drive.
If you can follow instructions and use some basic tools get the guide. If not look for a qualified repair shop or send it to Microsoft... Yikes

Ok, Again...Most Xbox 360 problems are from the same cause and that is bad contacts on the main board. There are three ic that cause 90 percent of the problems. The guide explains how to repair the problems. Too much to type here.
If you have a mechanical problem with your DVD then the guide will not help.

im having a problem with my lens ive cleaned it made sure there were no scratches.. ive had my 360 for 2 years now and it just started doing this recently.. i think the motor the lens is on is going bad.. it just keeps doing this repeated back and forth motion and clicks after each time. im not sure what to do.. Usually when it does that it is tring to read the disk but can not. The laser is probally getting weak, I would replace the picup assembly and motor if you have the skills to do so.
Or get an exact replacement for the complete DVD unit and swap boards with the old one, that way you do not have to flash your new drive.
hey magoo, I have anger issues and I crossed the line. my xbox seems to close the disk drive on itself for some reason and i was pissed at the time. I was taking my call of duty 4 disk out of the xbox and putting rainbow six vegas 2 in and the disk tray was closing and i cought it and yanked it and the whole plastic disk drive came out. i was clueless of what to do i curently have no more warrenty and i put the disk drive back in. so now my disks are unreadable every one of them and movies too. what should i do!?!

No that is not true if you open up your Xbox.
There is no way to detect if something has been opened except for those stickers they put on the seems of some electronic devices that say warranty viod if open.
Hey Magoo - I went to watch a HD DVD. When it started to access the internet it just froze. After 5 minutes I turned the unit off and back on to get a Error 73 which is supposedly a Hardware Ethernet failure. I really don;t want to pay MSoft $100 just to clear coding. Is this somwthing that you think needs repair?

Hi! i was playing a game the other day and suddenly my 360 turned off and the disk drive wouldn't open, I followed your instrctions and got the disk out. The next day, I tried playing another game, and it worked for 10 minutes, and then the same thing happened. I'm not sure, but I think it might be the power cord that's shorting out. my Xbox360 goes to a scrambled screen after about 3 minutes of operation, regardless of the game. Is this typical of the IC contacts problem, or is it something else?
When your screen gets scrambled smack you xbox on the side(not too hard) and see id the scramble changes or clears up, if it does then it is bad contacts
Another reason is it might be overheating, make sure your console has plenty of ventilation.

I got 2 red lights flashing. This supposedly indicates overheating but there has always been more than enough ventilation. I sent it to Xbox who just sent it back to me saying it was not covered by the warranty or I voided it somehow, which I did not. My problem with the 360 is that it displays no video. Everything is plugged in right and I get all the audio sounds, but no video, no picture on screen. I have tried new AV cables and that has not fixed the problem. I am thinking of sending it in for repairs, that is unless you can tell me how to fix it.

Hey my XBOX 360 will play fine for a couple of minutes and then all of a sudden the screen freezes. Yet it doesnt freeze. On halo 3 i can still die, respawn, get shot at, but my controller isnt connected. Hey, I was wondering if you could give a tutorial on fixing a disc tray problem. I have looked it up online, and I think it is pretty common, and so ya. My disc tray won't close. IT IS NOT JAMMED, TRUST ME. Instead it has something to do with the system, cause everyting else is fine except the tray slides smoothly in and out on its own and it will only stop sliding when it is open. Even when the console is turned off it still stays open. Please help, cause Microsoft is gonna make me pay 100$. Thanks!

Hi, My 360 has recently started to freeze up on any game I put in it. I played a game last nght for about an hour and a half and when I put the same game in there today it wont let me go further than 30 seconds... I try other games and it does the same thing, and the controller is frozen as well, I can't turn off the console with the controller after it freezes like that.... It is fine if I don't play for a a couple of weeks but if I play a few days in a row it does thins, I don't play for long periods of time usually, maybe just an hour.... what can be done about this???
Make sure you fan is running and your xbox 360 is not overheating. Also make sure it is getting enough air around it. Blocking the vents or placing it on carpet will cause it to over heat.
You may be seeing the beginning of bad contacts on the main board ic's, this will cause all sorts of different errors.
XBOX360 recently starting having issues with reading Halo3 (no other games/disks); replaced Halo3 disk and problem seemed to go away; problem resurfaced this week. receiving "Unplayable Disk" error on Halo3 only. However, when the console is running, you can hear the CD Rom 'revving' up and slowing down constantly. I'm planning to replace the whole thing but wondered if there is an easy fix.

Yes, DO NOT open up your Xbox 360 if it is still under warranty, it will void your warranty.
Make sure you halo 3 disk is clean and that it is not getting scratched. It should not be covered in fingerprints. The laser has a hard time reading dirty disks. You can wash it with mild soap and water, dry with a soft towel.
You can also try cleaning the lens of the laser inside your DVD with a Qtip and rubbing alchohol. Make sure it is completely dry.
I jsut bought a 360 off of craigs list it looks new came w/ everything and the guys said it works great. But I have a problem I tried hooking it up but I get no pic no sound. The cables he sent w/ it are ? HD monster cables. Now w/ these cables am I required to have an HD tv? Since everyone else is talking about their issues, let me share mine. My Xbox is shutting itself off during game play. It is completely random and is not accompanied by any red lights or anything. It will just shut off! I tried new power cords, different outlets and it still happens. The tricky thing is it is random and does not happen all the time, although when it does happen it continues all night. After shutting it down and coming back a week later it may not have any issues. Any idea what the issue is?

I've got the open tray error. I opened it up and the problem is not the magnet, I lubed the spindle and motor so I imagine that's not it, and I cleaned the lens with alcohol. When I turn on my xbox 360 with no game the laser tries to read then the motor spins real quick for one second. I don't know if it should but the laser doesn't move anywhere. When I put a disk in it does the exact same thing. It's like it doesn't see the disk. What else can I do to try to fix it??
I would replace the laser pickup assembly or the entire DVD, More than likely the laser has gone bad or weak when it does that. It is not reading the disk.

Okay, so I had my 360 sent in for a complete system failure and they replaced it, after I got it back it still won't play several games very well. When I try to play Fable 2 on it the main screen loads in squares, like about a fifth of the screen is normal, the rest is black, then it fills up. Then when I play it the menus don't respond quickly, and then for no reason it'll either freeze with verticle lines all over the screen, or the screen will distort in colored squares all over the place and freeze. Should I send it in because they sent me a faulty one or what?

I've had a problem where i'm playing and it says that it can't read the disk, yet i can still see the game playing in the background. Is it really a problem with the disk being read or dose my xbox just think it is? I use to have the problem playing some maps...but now they work fine....it only happens on 2 disks currently...and can happen at anytime during play. Everytime I play a game the disc players makes this really weird noise when it scans the disc, and when I take it out the disc is a little scatched.

my spindle motor has stopped working. when it tries to read the disc it will jerk ever so slightly, but other than that it has no movement is therea away to fix this easily? I have another dvd drive from another x box but the model is different and it won't read anything but dvds and the spindle motor is mounted on a different shaped piece as well as with a different conection if there is a way to fix this using the other drive that would be great. I really don't have any money to spend but I have the skills to do most repairs myself if I knew what I was working with
I just got an error code 73 on my 360 its said is a bad ethernet port, I called Microsft they told me my warranty is expired after I purchase my xbox 360 last year november of 07' now they want to charge me $100 dollars for a repair .. Heres what mine is doing, i'll be playing lets say call of duty and all of a sudden my video will freeze but you can still hear everything else in the background, then after about 30 seconds it will lock up. sometimes it will do it like 10 minutes after playing sometimes i get a couple of hours, could you help me out with that

Hey man, I have a request, my 360's disk tray won't stay shut, If I have a game in it and I try to close it then it will simply reopen even if I get the game in and turn off the power and if I disconnect it, it will eject the game then next time I connect it and turn it on. Surely someone who's technical enough to take apart an optical drive knows enough to find an electronics parts store, brick and morter or on-line, to find the replacement.
Again, I'm not Magoo, but my 360 has a bad disk, and while researching where to get it fixed (yes, sending it to a 3rd party - worth $65 for me not to take it apart myself) I came across this 45 mins of entertainment of people repeating the same questions over and over because apparently the ability to read escapes some people (and the ability to write / spell escapes a bunch of people, too).

To make this short and sweet. Two 360s in our house, bedroom and living room. Whichever 360 is in the living room gets an "Open Tray" error. When moved to the bedroom it will start reading again. Tried switching out power cords and did not fix the problem. Is there anything that could be affecting the disc reader in my living room? Problem....I have a bunch of xbox 360's that have bad chips in the CD-Rom drives. Usually i would just take the chip and throw it in a new drive but the chips are screwed up. Is there a way to Flash a new drive to sync it up with a system without having or knowing the old chips firmware. So last night to my dismay my box has two red lights pop up, and I got pissed, but thought...thank god it's not 3...uplugged it from the power source, turned off the heat in the room overnight, got up to play this morning and about 15 minutes into BAM, happened again. When it's about to happen you can hear something starting to move real fast (disc tray), like it's going to explode, but then it just stops, the ring pop up and then the box stops working, screen goes black.

Let your Xbox 360 console cool.
You may have to wait several hours for the console to cool enough. Do not turn on the console when it is still hot.
Make sure you can hear the fan running, also make sure you are not blocking the console from getting enough ventilation.
Do not lay your console on heavy carpet or in a confined book case or shelf
If you CPU is overheating you could replace the thermal compound. See the manual before you attempt this. The compound can be purchased at any radio Shack or electronic store.
My xbox is freezing when i turn it on. Not always at the same spot, but usually very early on and most cases before i can even get to the dashboard.
I had a problem, called Xbox support and they said i am out of warranty now and that i should try emptying my cache memory, so i was doing that everytime before i started playing, because if not it would just sparaticaly freeze in the middle of games.
Now it is freezing before i can even get into the game. I asked a local game store and the guy there said it sounded like my laser was going?

i got my xbox 360 this christmas and i loved it so i played it alot and one night when i went to go play at onje of my friends and link up together that night it started bluring up with red the the next day it looked worse you could hardly see so when i turned itoff and back on. it had a red light on the bottom right. error code e74 plz help me the av cable works but what other thing would do this?
Tried to replace DVD drive in my sons XBOX 360, but new drive would not work. Found out you need to change the keys or flash it so the drive will work. The new drive has ribbons attached (4 of them). The old only has 2 and the rest of the wires are soldered. What would be my easiest or best route to go? Where can I get right key for this older drive?
All of a sudden we cannot see video. We hear the game though. We tried a new AV cable. No luck. We reset the display setting, not luck. Any deas?

I need some help. My 360 will not reconize my neetwork and it's not my cable because it works for my other PC. It's under warrenty but im not sure if I should ship it in because of bad reports and long waits, but I dont won't to open it because that voids the warrenty. So what should I do? I've only had it for 3-4 months and it's never said any errors have occured. Plz help me.

my wireless controller that uses rechargable batteries just like stopped working. i tried everything with the rechargable cords and i even put regular batteries in but it didnt work. and when i try to plug in the rechargable cord to the controller, it makes a like green then red light on the cord for like a split second: what should i do???

Ok my Xbox is getting 2 rings which is overheating i know that. The problem is that it happens every 5min to 1 hour so not sure if fan went out.
