57YESTRYEAR INDIAN WOMEN INFLUENCE FOR CHANGE
There was an extraordinary galaxy of women who changed Indian society's prejudices towards feminine sex. As pioneers, during an era of British rule, ran a parallel movement to usher in uplifting of women for their rightful role in society. Present day's Indian women presence in all walks of life, politics to corporate leadership, has a strong bearing to the change movement ushered in 19th and 20th centuries in India for women and by women. Following women from Maharastra in India, who themselves had suffered deprivations and humiliation, gave their lives to uplifting women.
The first girl's school was started by Savitri Bai Phule in 1848 in Pune, India. This stepping stone led to 20 more schools for deprived casts within 11 years! Pandita Ramabai introduced women into politics by bringing nine women delegates to Congress session in 1889. By bringing in changes in antiquated Hindu laws Durgabai Deshmukh ushered in social changes. Premila Thackersay founded first women' university in Asia under the leadership of Maharshi Karve. Godubai, a widow, in her early twenties, studied in Sharada Sadan as its first widow student before courageously remarrying widower Maharishi Karve.
