Frank Lloyd Wright - A Brief Introduction

Frank Lloyd Wright is perhaps the most famous architect of modern times with a career that spanned 70 years. His designs encompassed residential houses to commercial projects to furniture pieces and clothing.

Wright incorporated his love of nature into his work; he used glass as a way to bring nature indoors and is known for his organic architecture.

This hub will look at some of Wright's lamp designs by Yamagiwa - the only authorized company to make reproductions of the original designs.

Taliesin-3

The Taliesin-3 is a table lamp that was originally designed by Wright in 1925. It is a piece that combines function and form to create a work of art. When looking at the lamp you can use your imagination to decipher what Wright may have used for his inspiration to create this vertical lamp.

The lamp sells for US$1000 and is made with Cherry Wood (cherry or cherry wine stain options). The dimensions of the lamp are:

Height: 29 3/4"

Width: 8 1/4''

Depth: 8 1/4''

Weight: 8.8lb

Storer-1

The Storer-1 is a floor lamp that you can envision on a street corner in any modern day city but 1923 was when Wright designed this steel and frosted glass lamp. The detailing in the steel is reminiscent of a skyscraper and at 6'4" tall it will tower over most people.

The Storer-1 is for sale at Yamagiwa for US$2400. The rest of the dimensions are:

Width: 6 1/16''

Depth: 8''

Weight: 30.4lb

Sumac-1

In 1902 Wright designed a chandelier called the Sumac and it is not a dainty light fixture but one that commands attention. The Sumac would not be out of place in a library, dining room, or a grand entrance-way. It is made of polished brass and weighs-in at 132 pounds.

It would be a shame to hang this light too high - you do not want to miss all of the precision and detailing that Wright designed and Yamagiwa executed in this timeless piece.

The light sells for US$58,000 and the dimensions are:

Height: 22 3/4''

Width: 23 3/4''

Depth: 23 3/4''

Frank Lloyd Wright Today

Of the 362 houses that Wright designed, 300 are still standing today a testament to his talent and genius. You can learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright and view his work at The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. It is an "organization dedicated to conserving the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and advancing the principles of organic architecture."

Great article, Harmony! I love Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture (most notably Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum) but I wasn't aware that he had designed any lamps. Thanks for the info - I look forward to reading more.

Great Hub, Harmony.

My father studied Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and drafting styles from some of Wright's colleagues and made a few lamps similar to the Taliesin-3 model you show here. I did not know it was a Wright design until I read your Hub.

IN did not want to leave Fallingwater when I visited. Another place I really enjoy is Victoria, British Columbia. What part of BC is yours?
