Yangon, Myanmar

Yangon is the little visited capital of Myanmar (formerly Burma). The recent rise of the country’s authoritarian military government has made the country look less attractive to travelers (not to mention the people who live there). Despite the political troubles, Yangon is a place to see and feel Southeast Asia as it used to be. The past is very evident in Yangon from its colonial architecture to its style and pace of life. Mostly devout buddhists, Burmese people are known for constructing some of the most beautiful temples and religious statues in Asia. Don’t be put off by the countries recent history. Myanmar and Yangon offer some of the best temple gazing in Asia. Shwedagon Paya is one of Myanmar’s most important holy sites. Local people flock there to worship, and there is a large gold statue of Buddha at the center. There is also a commercial aspect the temple. The grounds are surrounded by people selling souvenirs. As with other temples, it is best to ask before taking pictures. Saint Mary's Cathedral is a colonial relic. The inside of the church is quite intricate. The nearby Sule Paya is reputed to contain a holy relic: a strand of The Buddha’s hair. This is an interesting place for its design if not its religious value. The whole site is located inside a traffic roundabout. Later in the afternoons, Chinatown is a good place to shop. Souvenirs can be found en masse here, but beware if you are told you are buying something too valuable. Street vendors also head downtown after 6 p.m. to open shop. Despite this rule (government mandated), people who take the time to look will surely find some handcraft or antique worth purchasing. Yangon is a great place for this type of shopping. Recently, political activist and dissident Aung San Suu Kyi has become famous for her opposition to the Burmese junta’s brutal rule. Her house has become a kind of tourist destination, although there is a heavy security presence and it is impossible to get too close. Still, those who want to mix their sightseeing with a bit of geopolitics still try to get a glimpse. However, taking pictures is not advised.Noodles, potatoes, and curries are on the menu at most local eateries. Noodle vendors often provide tasty dishes for ridiculously cheap prices. Indian and Thai food are also well represented. Sabai Sabai is the best Thai place and one of the best upscale restaurants in general. Most people don’t think of putting Yangon on their itinerary, but the city is charming, despite the negative attention its leaders have earned.
