It Began With The Babe

A Tribute To Yankee Stadium

Many people will agree that it all began with a Babe Ruth homerun on a April Day in 1923 and many of us were there to watch the end when it ended with Mariano Rivera pitching on a September night in 2008. If you were never there , if you have never smelled Yankee Stadium on a cool September afternoon then you have missed much. Over the 85 years it has stood there some of if not the greatest baseball players to ever play the game played there. When the end came many of them were there to see it thru to the end. And oh what the memories must be like.

One of the greatest Yankees to ever live Yogi Bera was there beneth the stands for the final out , for the final game to ever be played in the great old stadium. Yogi said he was sorry to see it over. As a tear slowly made its way down his cheek. He said it the stadium would always be in his heart as would the memories of everything that happened there. It was Julia Ruth Stevens, 92-year-old daughter of the Babe, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a crowd of 54,610. When it was all over there was not a dry eye in the place. Parents held small children on their knees and pointed things out to them. I like to think that some where the Ghosts of Ruth , and others who have gone were watching. For on that very special Sunday afternoon it truly was a field of dreams.A field of dreams that I wish every one could have taken part in. Theres just something about a babseball stadium that brings back all those memories.

The Field Of Dreams Of Yankee Stadium

Out there some where the greatest Yankees that ever played the game along with many many of their fans and yes probally some of those people who hate them Yankees are watching a baseball game right now. Can't you just imagine the Babe walking to the plate and pointing to left field. Your heart would almost have to stop on that one. Yes I am one of those people who just don't want to let the old stadium go. I remember when I used to work right down the street. And I made it to every game I could. Yes I have sat in those seats up behind the dug out and listened to the players talk. And I remember a lot of other things like when the Dodgers played over at Ebbets field where they belonged and the Giants were up town where they belonged. Oh those were the days. But sadly a lot of the great things come to a end. So who ever you are or where ever you are. If you have a son or a daughter take them to a game or two. Let them smell the stadium on a cool September afternoon. Stay after the game , resist the urge to rush out with everyone else and let them just take it all in. They might even get a autograph or two and one day be setting here trying to write and crying their eyes out for a grand old stadium that will be missed like a relative. Yes I will miss the stadium and I will miss all the memories. And thank you God for making me a Yankee Fan.
