Do not be alarmed. Many woman end up with a yeast infection while pregnant. Like hemorrhoids, it is simply more common to get a candida infection while carrying a baby because your body is undergoing a lot of stress and change in a short period of time. Neither of these conditions is anything to get overly concerned about. They should be taken care of, however.
Every woman has a certain amount of yeast (also known as candida) in her vagina. In fact, it is common to have candida in the intestinal tract as well. You develop a yeast infection while pregnant when the candida grows so fast that it overwhelms your other microorganisms.
One of the biggest reasons you are more likely to develop a yeast infection while pregnant is that pregnant women have a higher level of estrogen. This, in turn, causes the vagina to produce glycogen. In short, glycogen creates an even more inviting environment for candida development. It is so because estrogen helps candida to grow faster and to stick more easily to the walls of your vagina.
Candida is not something that can be spotted. It does not have a certain appearance for you to easily detect. However, if you have a yeast infection while pregnant, I guarantee you will know it. The symptoms of a candida infection are extreme itchiness, irritation, soreness, burning, and redness in your vagina and labia. You also may end up with some swelling if you have a yeast infection while pregnant.
Another reason that many end up with a yeast infection while pregnant is that because your body is using up so many of its resources to grow a baby, you are depleting your vitamins and minerals. Your immune system is often not nourished as it should be. This, in turn, often leads to a yeast infection while pregnant.
It can even be a vicious cycle, because when expecting mothers get sick, they are often put on antibiotics. And antibiotics have been known to kill the good bacteria you have in your body, which does not help you to rid yourself of your yeast infection while pregnant.
Many are surprised to hear that antibiotics have a negative effect on a yeast infection while pregnant or at any other time. What they need to understand is that a yeast infection while pregnant is an actual fungus. You need the good bacteria in your body to rid you of fungus. And antibiotics have been known to kill both the bad and good bacteria - which does not help your situation of having a yeast infection while pregnant.
