Yoga and Grappling

To anyone seeking to complete thier martial arts training, Yoga should definetly be an essential part of training - especially for the grappler and Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Yoga addresses both mental and physical aspects making it one of the most valuable tools to incorporate into your life. Not to mention the added flexiblity that will propel your grappling game to new levels. Rickson Gracie and Wallid Ismail have known of the benefits of Yoga on Jiu-Jitsu for quite a while. It's time to re-think how Yoga can fit in to your training.

The emphasis on ground work in Yoga is important. The mechanics of Yoga resemble many movements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The "Crow" pose, "Downward Dog", and many others strengthen muscles that a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner will be using constantly.

Maybe the most important benefit of Yoga in Jiu-Jitsu, is mental. Yoga teaches you to relax and control your breathing even when in the most strained poses and positions. This is the most direct link to grappling, as you will find yourself in very compromising positions while fatigued. Learning to relax and breathe in these situations is key to ground control.

Learning not to panic mentally when your body starts to strain under duress is key. Keeping calm and even focusing on the pain and stress can work wonders for your Jiu-Jitsu game. Because we all know when you panic, you make mistakes, and when you make mistakes, you get caught. Go ahead and take the Yoga Challenge.
