Yorkshire Terrier Puppy
Our two Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are the friendliest and most intelligent pets we have ever had. They are totally different from each other, but fit in well as part of the family.
I want to help you with some advice about choosing a Yorkshire Terrier puppy or, should I say, having a Yorkshire Terrier puppy choose you.
We read all of the guide books when we first decided a Yorkshire Terrier puppy was what we wanted. Some advice is better than others.
Check out the breeder first. This is most important. they should be selectively breeding and not breeding every dog they own. If they are offering to separate puppies before three months don't go near them. They have neither the dog's nor your interests at heart.
Always look for a sociable dog among the litter. You don't want to end up trying to calm down an overactive dog or deal with a sullen antisocial dog unless you are a skilled trainer.
You should spend some time with the litter and see which dog feels right for you. Don't rush this. There may not be a right dog in every litter so keep trying. You may have to see many litters before you find the right dog. this is particularly so if you are looking for a show dog.
Overall you want a friendly dog, but not hyperactive, but one capable of standing up for himself or herself within the litter. You do not want one that bites a lot, but it should be happy to gum your hand or a chew. The dog should appear "with it" and by that I mean is aware of it's surroundings and reacts to them.
Check the puppy you choose on it's own away from the litter. It's demeanour should not change too much.
Hopefully, by following these brief guidelines you will get the right Yorkshire Terrier puppy to join your family.
