You Can't Succeed From A Position of Desperation
61The tighter things get the looser you need to be
While this recession is making things really difficult for a lot of us on a material basis, it is also causing some people to implement a barrier to their success from a psychological basis. That barrier is "fear" and it is greatly enhanced by "desperation".
Think about it for a moment. You have bills due, no money for groceries; every where you look somebody wants some money from you and you don't know how you are going to find it all. This is a situation many of us are in right now. Some of us sink into despair and just ride it out hoping like crazy that "something" will turn up. But some of us tend to straighten up in the face of challenge and instead try and do something about our situation - like finding a second job; selling things online; or (and this is what more and more people are doing every month) try and find a way of making money online. That's a good thing, right?

When is desire to succeed not helpful?
Striving to get to a better place, a better standard of living, or simply trying to pay the bills makes any internet business you try based on money alone. Go on, laugh: tell me "but isn't that the point of having a business online? To make money?" I know that is what a lot of people think; that is what I used to think.
BUT I found the road to making money online really difficult, so I decided to try a little thing called "observation" - used my psych training for this one :) I read sales pages; watched videos of Gurus explaining their products but instead of paying attention to the products I was looking at the hidden things that were implied in these remote interactions and I found out something really surprising. There is not one kind of Guru online - there are at least three.
First you have what I call the Show Offs. These guys stand in front of fancy houses, show off their cars and talk heaps about holidays and the likes. They are tempting you into the "easy" money and they make money off of people who want money for nothing - incidentally in case you are considering it remember that you only ever get what you pay for in life.
At the other end of the spectrum you have the "Recluse". These are the people that have found their own money making niche and they are quietly happy that they are making a decent income and don't need to tell anybody else about it.
And then you have the ones in the middle - these gurus love the money they get; who wouldn't? But as you spend time listening to them you also notice that they love their lifestyle more. They are not full of hype - they are usually happy to tell you they have a perfectly normal home life and what have you; but more importantly they are genuinely happy in their life. These guys are a success because they are happy in what they are doing and they share their knowledge with other people simply because they can.
But what does this have to do with your quiet desperatoin to get some money to pay the bills that are overdue?
How do you react when you are short of money?
Now it's your turn to share - how do you react when you are short of money?
See results without votingIt's all about attitude
Your success or lack of it will be determined by your attitude, especially in a crisis situation. if you get overly worried you can't focus and as things get worse so will your levels of desperation. You cannot succeed from this emotional state. If you feel like arguing with me think back to your dating days when you were likely to have spent some time in a pub or club. If you are like me you are a people watcher. Do you remember the geeky guy (before geeks were popular) that would get egged on by his mates to go and ask a girl to dance and she would nearly always say "no". Why did she do that? She could sense his desperation and lack of confidence.
It works the other way too. I knew heaps of girls who were so desperate to have a boyfriend that they would flirt too much; laugh too loud and basically make an exhibition of themselves. That is a clear indication of their desperation. Desperation is not pretty, it is not going to get you deals and it will actually cause the opposite of what you want from your actions.
It can be done
It is not easy keeping an air of calm and confidence when you are faced with mounting problems. It is harder still to have confidence in any new venture you might try in the desperate hope it will get you out of your worsening situation. Why do you think so many people do try answering an ad online like "You can be making money in 15 minutes from now" or "I made $10,000 in a week." They desperately want out of the situation they are in and will click on anything in the fervent hope that this one thing will finally be what they are looking for.
If you are desperate for money sell something. Possessions can be replaced. If you haven't got anything possession you can live without then go and work at McDonalds or something. Don't go making your situation any worse by buying into programs that don't work. Yes running a business online is fun; yes it does provide a really relaxed lifestyle. But if you talk to the online gurus about their success they will tell you two things - it is not a get rich quick thing and when you do get into it be prepared to put in a lot of hard work.
