Don’t Poison Your Dog With Tainted Treats

It’s criminal what “dog treat” manufacturers consider acceptable ingredients in dog treats! Treats are supposed to be a reward a dog considers a prize from his pet parent, not a poisonous carcinogenic, pesticide filled death pill! Some of the best known dog treats are made from ingredients the FDA has classified as pesticides, and who ever heard of “edible plastic.” The truth is that you may be slowly, unknowingly, poisoning your dog with the treats tainted with chemicals and carcasses. Your dog is not a car, so why would you feed it a chemical used to make anti-freeze.

The truth is that as consumers and pet parents we have been duped by corporations that don’t care about the health of your companion animal, but rather profiting by utilizing the cheapest ingredients they can obtain. Take a close look at the treat box to ensure you are not giving your dog things like “animal digest,” the term says it all. Animal Digest is defined by AAFCO as “material which results from chemical and or enzymatic hydrolysis of ‘clean’ and un-decomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed” Yet, they fail to define what are acceptable amounts.

Watch out for BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin and propelene glycol, all of which are not allowed for human consumption. BHA and BHT are known carcinogens. Ethoxyquin is a pesticide that is banned from human food. Propylene glycol is a preservative fused in anti-freeze, cosmetics and moisturizers (so you should probably check your make up and moisturizer too).

“Meat by-product meal” (occasionally listed as chicken by-products or poultry by products. By product meal is nothing more than dry, ground chicken carcasses that are deemed unfit for human consumption. By-product chicken meal is slaughtered left over “parts” to include: necks, undeveloped eggs and intestines-basically everything left over after the meat is taken out for human consumption. The moral of the story is NO by-products!

Additionally, most treats are coming from China. Check the label to see where the treat is coming from. In today’s world it is truly a safer bet to buy treats that are grown and manufactured in the USA. Your dog is probably your best friend, so endeavor to find holistic dog treats. There are several treats sold by reputable companies like Petlane.com, Grandma Lucy’s and Cloud Star that you can rest assured are truly a treat.
