Your Celtic Shamrock Tattoos Will Tell On You
79Celtic shamrock tattoos are amongst the more popular of the many Irish tattoo designs. Long believed to bring good fortune, the shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and Irish luck. The Christians there have also adopted shamrock as a motif due to how Christianity was brought into Ireland. With such rich culture of symbolism, it is no wonder that Celtic shamrock tattoos are a hot favorite with the Celt of Irish decent.
Symbol of Ireland
The shamrock is an unofficial symbol of Ireland like the harp and the leprechaun. Easily recognized by its compound leaves with three small leaflets, shamrock has been indigenous to the countryside of Ireland since time immemorial. It calls to mind the rolling hills and dales of the Emerald Isle (Ireland), and with them, the spiritual and upbeat nature of the Irish people. With the rich connotation, what better way for a Celt to identify with the unique Irish culture than wearing Celtic shamrock tattoos?
Good Luck and Fortune
Another appeal of the Celtic shamrock tattoos is the good luck they represent. Shamrock is sometimes thought of as a "lucky clover." In Irish traditions, the bride's bouquet usually includes a shamrock for good luck. So does the boutonniere or buttonhole of the groom. If you need extra good luck and good fortune, a good choice is the four-leave clover. Related by not exactly shamrock, the four-leave clover is another favorite amongst the various Celtic tattoo designs.
Celtic Shamrock Tattoos are Sacred
Celtic shamrock tattoos are linked to Christianity and the indigenous Celtic religions too. In old Celtic culture, the number three was thought to possess magical powers. That's why the ancient Druid had long considered the shamrock a sacred plant because its leaves resemble the Celtic triple spiral image. Later when St. Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland, legend has it that he illustrated the doctrine of the Holy Trinity with a shamrock. He compared the three aspects of one god to the three leaflets of the shamrock. Since 1700's till this day, it is customary to wear a shamrock leaf on St. Patrick's Day celebrated on March 17.
As you see, Celtic shamrock tattoos are modern presentations of a very old and potent symbol. With the Celtic shamrock tattoos, you're telling the world that you either have Celtic blood or admire the Irish heritage. Then maybe you're just expressing your religious beliefs. Or--this last one is sure to be everyone's favorite--you're looking for a little bit of good luck and good fortune. So, what do you want your Celtic shamrock tattoos to tell on you?
