Your Child... Your Greatest Asset
53
Your child is the greatest asset you will ever have. It is a fact to carry close in the heart and mind every single day for it is easy to forget that in the every day caring of children.
It is difficult to keep that thought close even before that child is born.
As a mother-to be...... the days become exhausting as sleep is lost beause of that kicking child within. It becomes hard to just go to the grocery store due to the unbalanced weight carried in the body. You long to eat one meal without being punished by heartburn.
Daddys-to-be lose patience with the snap changes in moods in the moms-to-be .. changes that occur at the drop of a hat.. They are tired of having to move to another room at night to get some sleep due to the restless comings and goings of their wife... and of having to run out to the corner store at midnight or later for tomato juice or chocolate or pickles.
It is hard not to lose sight of the value of that child ..... even as your heart is filled with the joy of the newborn... with nights broken of sleep anywhere from two to ten times..... with a body that just can't seem to snap back where it was before the pregnancy ever began... with the ear tuned in to every sigh and rustle from that little body's bed.
The great asset factor diminishes when the toddler pulls everything out of every drawer and spills maple syrup over the dining room rug... when the two year old fills the toilet with the bath towel left draped over the tub edge... when the preschooler throws a fit simply because he can.
You get the idea.
This goes on through the 18th year .. and then....... the child walks out of the door ... finally a person in his own right... and you look at him and all you see is that newborn you brought home from the hospital that day 18 years before and realize that the greatest asset of your lifetime has become a priceless jewel for the ages.
The lost sleep .. the heartburn .. the midnight runs .. the midnight feedings .. the syrup on the rug. ... the tantrums .. the plugged toilets..... and all else that folllowed ... are long forgotten.. left only as humorous tagnotes for future family get-togethers.
Left in their place are the heartwarming feelings of close snuggles and warm cheeks and proud gazes and awesome smiles and grateful thankful hugs... memories of warm backslaps and loving high fives with raucous laughter.. and gentle evenings of special holidays .. celebrations .. and the sight of your child transformed into that full complete adult human being .... truly the greatest asset of your lifetime.
