Your Home Business: A Few Do's and Don'ts
46Your home business is going to allow you freedoms the old 9-5 couldn't if you plan carefully and stay alert. Your business will thrive under your care. There are little things that bolster or sabotage it so doing an internal check-up on a set schedule is important. Keeping track of what's going right is just as an important motivating tool as knowing what needs work. Below are some of the standard rules of trade that people forget too quickly. They're offered as a refresher course, if you will.
- Find your bliss: Whatever it is you plan to do from your home be sure it interests you. Your home business should make you smile more often than cringe when you think of it.
- Get all the training you can. Things are constantly changing and being updated. A little expertise never hurt anyone's business.
- Be your own cheerleader. Hand out business cards to everyone you know and everyone you meet.
- Get to know your competition. You may become allies and a great source of information for one another.
- Stay connected. Join organizations affiliated to your business. Read and write blogs, join forums. Keep friends & family in the loop.
- Hire The Big Guns. Unless you're a lawyer and a CPA, hire good legal advisors. A CPA will keep your monetary affairs smoothed out for you. A business lawyer provides advice on all things involving contracts.
- Set work hours and stick to them. Kids don't go to work with you so adjust your schedule. It will take time to get settled into a routine but stop work at closing time. You stopped or are stopping "the old grind" to be with your family, so do it.
- Don't put off anything until tomorrow that really needs doing today. Know the difference between those two. It is too easy to fall into the trap of "It'll be ok to go do this now because I can finish that tonight." Your business is just that, a business. Not many go far by having employees that won't stick to deadlines but don't become a workaholic.
- Don't be afraid of mistakes. These are learning tools so use your own and learn from others.
Your home business Is going to be a great reward for you and your family. Keep things simple, hire the experts when you need them and never feel you're too old to learn. Keep abreast of the industry changes to be as current and competitive as the others in your field. These few ideas should carry you far, they worked for the millionaires before you and they'll work for those after.
