While the maxi dress certainly isn't a newcomer to fashion, it has become increasingly popular the last two summer seasons and I would say a staple item for anyone with style.

Why this recent revelation? The other day I was wearing a pretty basic maxi dress in my favorite color, aqua blue. I walked into the house having not seen my husband yet that day and was greeted with "Wow, you look pretty". Now my husband is fantastic and it’s not to say he never gives me compliments, but they are not as frequent as a girl might like. So his sudden urge to compliment my appearance was mildly shocking.

The beauty of the maxi dress is that it hides your imperfections from the bust line down, but shows off areas that, not all, but a lot of women are ok with: boobs, shoulders and arms. In my case, I am rather short and it’s my legs that are the culprit. My torso is an average length but my legs are stumpy. When I put on a pair of shorts they can be like sausage casings for my thighs. Obviously, I avoid this at all costs so a maxi dress is a better option for me. No one knows what's going on under the maxi! It creates the illusion that you have fabulously long legs, and that you are more slender than you actually are.

A Few Guidelines...

There are a few guidelines to consider when wearing a maxi dress.

Length. Length is very important. A maxi dress should fall between your ankle and the top of the foot. Be wary of anything shorter which could distort the proportion you are going for. And if it’s too long and dragging on the ground you're just going to ruin it anyway so look for one that fits your height.

Prints. Prints are great; don't be afraid of a print! If you are quite petite, closer to the 5 foot range, many fashion sources will recommend you stay away from a large print. I say if you love it, if it speaks to you and makes you happy, wear it! I am 5'2 and wear big print maxi dresses! They make me feel good and in turn I know I look good because I am confident in them. That being said, a solid in a great color can be just as fabulous. Pick what you feel best in, what makes you smile:)

Feet. While a maxi dress hides the unflattering, it does show off your feet since they are the only thing showing down there. Do us all a favor and make sure you have a pedicure or at least do one yourself at home. A bright color polish is always great but sometimes there is nothing better than a French pedicure.

Shoes. Shoes can make or break the look. There are two suitable options (in my opinion), a wedge or a flat sandal (strappy or thong style). Wedges are great if you are shorter and need a lift. In fact, with some maxi dresses they are a must if the dress is too long and drags on the floor without the added height of a wedge. Even though I am 5'2, I find that most maxis I can wear with a flat. Whichever shoe you choose stick to the casual, bohemian vibe the dress evokes.

"It makes me look pregnant!" No, it doesn't! Or at least it shouldn’t. The reason that a maxi dress could make you look as if you're with child is if there is too much gathering under the bust line or if the dress is made out of a very stiff cotton, in which case it is probably making your rear look large and in charge as well. Stick to more flowing fabrics like a jersey knit. Remember, you are going for a long and lean look!  This is not to say that a maxi is not a great and obvious choice when you are pregnant, but you do not have to look pregnant if you're not when you wear a maxi.

Another tip: Stay away from pockets around the hips. While this can work if the pockets have a very slim profile (or you’re a size zero) most times they add bulk to your hips and ruin the long and lean illusion. As with all trends, if it doesn't flatter you stay away from it!

Don't be afraid to take risks with the maxi dress! Currently, I am in hunt of a great zebra print. It may not be my husband’s favorite, but if it makes me feel good that's what's important. Go try a maxi dress! I assure you, you won’t be disappointed!
