Being the host of a party is incredibly stressful for any individual, even those people that have repeatedly done it before. In fact, it can give some sleepless nights for weeks before an important party. This is mainly because the role of host has change so drastically in recent years. Previously, it would have meant making all of the preparations yourself for a formal gathering. This is not the case today but the role of host is even more comprehensive as a result of that. It is incredibly easy to fall into the old ways of being the host of a party and spend time being that formal and rigid role. However, you should make sure that your stint of being the host is fun and as enjoyable for you as the party is for your guests. Entertaining is very different these days and incredibly enlightening for those that have never done it before. You can see just how much actually goes into the planning and organisation of a party but still can easily fit it into your own lifestyle without actually disrupting the routine you have in your everyday life. It is all about knowing what to do when being the host so make sure that you follow the points below to get it right first time! • Follow your own style. Previous generations may have organised a party differently and being a host was definitely a different proposition a few years ago. As such, do not be dictated to. Just make sure that you can do it your way and thus make it your own, which leads nicely into… • You cannot please everyone all of the time. In fact, this is impossible. Just make sure that the majority are pleased and so are you. This is one of the negatives of being the host but also one of the positives because it means that you may find yourself a smash hit in the role! Try to please everyone but don’t feel so down if it is not possible. There is only so much of you to go around. • Choose a date, time and venue first and find out how many people can go. If you are throwing a party for a specific person then make sure that he or she can attend. You may also want to tell the people that he or she absolutely wants there to make sure that they are free. As long as the important people can make it, or at least most of them, then you have found your date and should not change it. • Choose your theme wisely. Once a theme is set in place it cannot be changed because it has to appear on the invitations. If you choose an impractical theme then you may find yourself even more stressed than you would be normally when being the host. Make sure that all the materials you need are within reach in terms of location, highly accessible in terms of their availability and cheap! You do not want to go over budget but this all needs to be thought out before you start if you want to get it right. • Stick to any traditions that you have if you are being the host for a family party. Having your father make a toast or dancing the first dance to a certain song… you would not believe how far these traditions contribute to a party so make sure that you speak to your family and friends and stick to any ongoing traditions that apply.
