You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty

Years ago I came across a fantastic book called "Your Body's Many Cries for Water", subtitled, "You are not sick, you are thirsty!" This is the truest statement ever made.

Dr. F. Batmanghelidj (Batman-ge-lij) is an Iranian doctor who had been educated in the West. He returned to Iran and started to practice there. After the regime change in the '70's he was arrested, all his assets confiscated, and thrown into prison (mostly for the crime of having been educated in the West). He was scheduled for execution. While he awaited his sentence to be carried out he started treating the prisoners for various diseases. The guards saw the amazing good he was doing and so they managed to have his execution delayed, which was really only for state drama anyway.

He had no medications so he used the only thing available in abundance - water. He eased 80-90% of all the diseases of the prisoners. That is an astounding number. He significantly reduced ulcers, chronic back pain, asthma, alergies, high blood pressure, just to name a few. The list goes on and on.

I can say from first-hand experience that proper hydration of the body does indeed work. I followed the methods he outlines in his book - drinking so many ounces of water per pound of body weight. I end up drinking about 80 ounces of water a day - more if I have anything with caffeine (which is naturally dehydrating). As a result I've lowered my blood pressure, lowered my blood cholesterol, eased a significant lower back pain, gotten rid of all those annoying aches and pains, sleep more soundly and feel more rested as a result, have more energy, and for all you ladies - now have a glowing and youthfully dewey complexion (no small feat after 50 - all my friends ask me how I do it and I tell them but they don't seem to believe I get that from just water).

You may think 80 ounces (a half gallon plus another 16 oz. glass) is a lot of water to get into your body in one day, everyday. Well yeah, you have to work at it. But the results are well worth it. Just to not have that lower back pain is enough to keep me at it. If you're bigger than me (not hard to do, I'm rather small) you'd have to drink more. My husband, 6 ft. tall, drinks a gallon a day. But after a while it's easy, and you feel more thirsty because your body doesn't want to give up the delicious ease it feels by being well-hydrated.

I've added a link to Amazon where you can get the book. It's only around $10. He also has a website and sells DVDs directly on various ailments - back pain in particular.

I'm not a doctor and I do not represent Dr. Batmanghelidj in any way. I just found something that works - so I use it.

Oh, and one last, very important note. I bought a water filtration system that makes my drinking and cooking water alkaline. Taking the acidity out of your water is immensly beneficial, but that is another subject that I won't elaborate on here. I would recommend, at the very least, drinking water that it ph balanced. You can get a water-testing kit at almost any health-food store, or a water store. I used to buy water from a water store and I felt more and more thirsty and couldn't figure out why. So I tested it and it was very acidic. As soon as I changed over to an alkiline water my thirst went back to a normal level.

"As his controversial book quietly gathers support worldwide, the doctor behind one of medicine's most extraordinary theories explains why he has turned his back on conventional wisdom to treat his patients with water, not drugs." - Daily Mail, London

Great hub. I live in Arizona, so I actually drink more water than you recommend. Should your recommended amount be adjusted by body weight?

Ron - Yes. He states that you should drink half your body weight in ounces every day. But being in Arizona you should probably have more. I used to live in Santa Fe and I drank a lot more than was required, just because it's so dry there. Thanks for the input.

I have long been a big fan and consumer of water. You have produced a well written article on an extremely important subject. Bully for you!

James - A whole lot of our healthcare problems, and costs, would just go away if everyone understood this. But the change in paradigm is coming. Thanks for the support.

I agree 100% a well hydrated body will take care of the aches.  What is the quantity you drink each time, and how many times a day.

jshaiju - you drink half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 200 pounds you need 100 ounces of water a day, more if you drink caffeine. He says to drink a cup about a half hour before a meal and two cups after. Digestion takes a lot of water. Thanks for posting.

Hi Madame X Thanks for this important hub. I was hilkng at 10,000 feet last year in extreme heat. When I was overcome by faintness, carted off to hospital and rehydrated at great expense. Cannot endorse your hub more highly. Water is very important indeed. I am still paying off the medical bill!

Gypsy Willow - I used to live in a high-altitude tourist town and everyday people would be fainting in the town square. It seemed the ambulance was always there. Water is too simple of a solution for people to believe that it can cure so much. But, as happened to me (and you too) you have to live through it to fully appreciated it. Thanks for posting.

Bloggify - it takes a good two weeks or a month to start to feel the effects. But it's well worth it! Thanks for posting.

LOL I've been doing it for years. Not by prescrition exact numbers though, but as much as my body asks for. :) I used to keep it very thirsty when I was young, but at some point I discovered that I feel way better when I really care about hydration - so there it started. :)

Since I suffer from many of the complaints you mention in your hub, I'm very interested in the fact that you were able to relieve your symptoms just with more water! I do drink a lot of water, but also a lot of coffee.

The most important one for me is rehydrating my skin. It's soooo dry!

Thanks so much for the hub. MM

I took a body sculpting (his clever phrase for body building for women)class a few years ago and the instructor was a big believer in hydrating your system.  He carries a half gallon container of water everywhere he goes.  There are some hazards to OVER-hydrating, as there are with anything you OVER do.  But, for most people it's extremely hard to over-hydrate.  I slacked off on my water intake, thanks for reminder that I need to get back at it.

Misha - yeah, there's nothing like the delicious calm that comes from lots of water! bottoms up :)

Mighty Mom - yes it really truly helped - immensely. I recommend the book highly. Dr. Batman describes in technical detail what's going on with various ailments and exactly how water can aid their relief. He talks in a clear voice so even laymen can easily understand how things work. Also, he says you need a cup of water for every cup of caffeine - and that's on top of your required ounces!

As for your skin, the water is the best hydrator but I also clean my face with Pond's cold cream every night. You will be amazed at how it helps dryness and it's only $5. Try it!

KCC - I carry a half gallon around too, and sometimes it still doesn't feel like enough! I just never want to go back to how I felt before I started proper hydration. Good for you on getting back to it!

Thanks all, for visiting.

Most people go everyday dehydrated. That effects the way your organs function. It's more water than most people think they actually drink.
