Zhouzhuang, China
78Travel Zhou Zhuang, China
Welcome to Zhou Zhuang, the Venice of China ! Zhouzhuang is one of the ancient water cities in Jiangsu province. It is 30 km southeast of Suzhou, and makes a good day trip from Shanghai.
If you want to get away from the New China, and see one of the best-preserved ancient China cities, you should take one of the one-day tours to marvelous Zhou Zhuang.
Zhouzhuang halfway between Shanghai and Suzhou. If you have plans to visit either of these two cities (or both), you should spare one day for Zhouzhuang.
The city can be visited on your own, but I recommend taking one of the tours from Shanghai tourist office, next to the Shanghai Stadium. Note that some of these China tours' guides only speak Chinese You may need to ask for an interpreter.
The city of Zhouzhuang is surrounded by lakes on its four sides, but what makes this place so special are its water lanes and its stone bridges.
In the region there are other ancient water cities, but Zhouzhuang is considered number one among Chinese tourists.
Most of the buildings in Zhouzhuang belong to the Yuan, Qing and Ming dynasties. Many of the old houses are open to the public.
With more than one hundred rooms, the Hall of Shen's Residence is one of the most interesting of the private houses in Zhouzhuang.
Shen House was built in 1742 by the son of the first millionaire of the province, Shen Wansan. He made his fortune from the silk trade.
In the visit to Shen House, tourists can see the Qing's style complex, which consists of several buildings connected through arcades, aisles and courtyards.
Some of the points of interest in the Shen House are the water gate and the wharf, the gate tower, the tearoom, the main hall; and the Xiaotang Tower and Back Hall, where cultural relics are exhibited.
The origins of the ancient China city date back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC). In the 11th century its name was changed to the present Zhouzhuang after the name of Zhou Digong, a rich merchant who had donated the money to build a Buddhist temple.
The city of Zhouzhuang is traffic free. It is small enough to be visited in a few hours. Because this is one of China's top tourist destinations some parts of the town are overcrowded with Chinese tourists.
Walking along the narrow alleys of Zhouzhuang is a good way to see the ancient houses that have been torn down almost everywhere else in the region. At the same time is a good place to see how fast China is changing. I was surprised to see how the most advanced and expensive digital cameras belonged to local tourists.
Zhouzhuang has more than one thousand houses. Of them, almost one hundred have their own courtyard and arch gateways made of stone brick.
One of the households open to the public is the Ye Chucang Residence. Ye Chucang (19th-20th century), was a poet famous for his campaigns against the consumption of opium and gambling, which were popular pastimes among local people at that time.
Zhang House, with more than seventy rooms, is another of the ancient houses tourists can visit. The house was built by Xu's family in the 15th century. The property was bought by the Zhang family in the early Qing Dynasty.
Zhang house has several buildings and courtyards. The river flows under the main hall. The place is currently under the protection of the local government.
A good way to visit the town is on one of the local gondolas. You can rent one of them for a tour of the town.
You will have to look for one of the empty boats, and ask the rower for the price. You can negotiate the fare. Some of the organized tours include a gondola ride, but most of them don't.
If you are on an organized tour, your meal will be included. I recommend forgetting about the free lunch and heading to one of the local restaurants in the center. The tour meal consists mainly of rice and cheap snacks. In the local restaurants you can get an excellent lunch for a few cents.
There are four water canals that form a grid pattern. The canal streets are lined with willow and poplar trees.
The history of tourism in Zhouzhuang began in 1984, when one of the paintings on display in a New York art gallery was bought by Armand Hammer. The American businessman later presented this painting to Deng Xiaoping. This act was broadly publicized in China. Since then, Chinese visitors have flooded the town during the tourist season.
The Quanfu Temple is situated at one of the ends of the city , next to the Nanhu Garden.
The Nanhu Garden was built by a poet, Zhang Jiying, during the Jin Dynasty (3rd-5th century).
This garden surrounds the Quanfu Temple. In this area you also find the Chengxu Taoist Temple.
The Chengxu Taoist Temple was built during the Song Dynasty (11th century), and after many expansions is now one of the biggest Taoist Temples in the region.
The temple consists of several halls and pavilions, each more beautiful than its predecessor. The temple is considered a Taoist architectural masterpiece.
If you click on the picture you will see a video I shot in this temple. In it you can see a ritual I saw. If you want a wish to come true, you have to write your desire on a band and throw it in to the tree's branches. The higher it hangs , the quicker the wish will come true. If the band falls to the floor, your desire may never be a reality.
The range of accommodation in Zhouzhuang is rather scarce. You will find some small hotels in the old town, close to the two main bridges. But you really do not need to sleep here. This is rather a daytrip China travel destination.
If the Twin Bridges have inspired many local painters, Milou tower is the place where old Chinese poets found their inspiration. Particularly famous is the "Collected Works on Milou Tower", with more than 100 poems by the founders of the South Society.
The Milou Tower retains an ancient charm, but it is a modern reconstruction.
The bridges of Zhouzhuang are very popular subjects among local artists. You can buy one of these paintings in the souvenir shops you will find in the alleys next to the canals.
If Zhouzhuang is famous for its water canals, stone bridges and old houses, when it comes to food, what everybody in China recognizes as typical from Zhouzhuang is the Wansan Pig’s Leg.
The upper pig’s leg is stewed in brown sauce over a slow fire. The meat becomes very tender. Note that it is not as greasy as it looks. You can see in the picture a street stall selling this local specialty.
Other typical food from Zhouzhuang are the meat balls with three delicacies, made with wheat, mixed meat of chicken, shrimps and minced pork, boiled in chicken soup; and the river products, white clam and shrimps. Zhouzhuang's Wansan brand wine and liquor should not be missed either.
Other famous water cities in the region are:
Zhujiajiao, 47 km from Shanghai, with over one thousand houses of the Ming and Qing style, its canals, its ancient bridges and its gardens. The most famous landmarks are the Baoguo Temple, the Fangsheng Bridge, the Town God's Temple and the Zhuxi Garden.
Wuzhen, 140 km from Shanghai, is more than 1200 years old. You can visit the Lizhi Study House, Weaving and Dying Workshop.
Suzhou is famous for the Humble Administration Garden, one of China's top gardens. In Suzhou you can also visit the Hanshan Temple, the Tiger Hill and the Silk Museum. The city of Suzhou is a great place to shop for silk.
Wuxi, 128 km from Shanghai, where you can visit Lake Tai, Yuan Tou Zhu Island, and the Tang Dynasty city, a reproduction of the Tang dynasty town.
Well my friend that is it, this virtual tour of Zhouzhuang has come to its end. I hope you have enjoyed it.

Zhouzhuang looks and sounds like a beautiful place. Now I'll have to add it to my list of places to see. (sigh)
I just found this hub. As I am going to China shortly I found it very interesting.
i been here it was the most amazing thing i have ever seen in my life!!!!! i want to go back... try and go in the off season when there isnt alot of travle tours because it can get crouded at times but this place is huge and beautiful make sure you eat the local food its awsome!!!
We were taken there by the Chinese marketing director of a factory my brother visited. On a rainy afternoon two weeks ago, we wandered in and out of the old buildings, posed on the bridges and heard one fascinating story after another from an English speaking guide, Lucy. We played wooden sticks in time to the minor key singing gonaliera and enjoyed imaginging life in a canal town long, long ago. A magical afternoon.
We just got back from ZZ - ZhouZhuang (it's Nov 2008) and it really is a must visit place. We are sure to visit more water villages around Shanghai.
Before our ZZ day trip, we visited this site, so we just want to share with you an update since it was not all that easy to get information on how to get there and back:
Take the Shanghai metro Line 4 to Shanghai Stadium (there is a metro station called Shanghai Stadium, do not get off on the Indoor stadium station). There is a bus terminal at the Stadium Gate 5 which is around 20min walk from the metro station. There are a number of ticketing/travel agents at the terminal, we bought ours from the booth directly opposite Bus terminal door 2.
The tickets each were RMB150 to ZhouZhuang, a return bus ticket (seat number marked on ticket) and includes access to ZhouZhuang ancient town and entry to 7 locations (museums, residences). On board, the bus driver sold us a ZZ map for RMB4 and pointed out the drop-off/pick-up point. Our bus departed on time at 9.30am and we arrived ZZ around 11am and dropped us off at the carpark in Fu Guai Yuan (Elegance Garden). The bus departs back to Shanghai at 4.30pm from the drop-off point (no other choices). From the drop-off point it's about 10 min quick walk to the entrance of the ancient town.
When we arrived at the ZZ entry gate to ancient town, we saw the entry ticket at RMB100 for 10 locations, so our RMB150 for entry plus 7 locations which included a return SH bus ride was a pretty good deal. Btw no tour guide included in our package. But we suspect that Nov is low season so the prices were favorable. The gondola rides were RMB150.
There is an entry gate to the ancient town and you need to show your ticket to get in-out of the paid area. We noticed more locals were dining outside of the paid area, so we figured it's better prices where the locals were eating. The pork leg is good, so it the Grandma Tea.
At first it seemed we had too much time in ZZ, but it was just right to arrive 11am and leave 4.30pm for a day of lazy walking, snacking on pork trotters, taking photos and enjoying the scenery. And for coffee lovers, there is an illy coffee express located near one of the bridges.
(Alternatively, our hotel said they can arrange a tour to pick us up from the hotel in Pudong at 8.30am and this would include tour guide with lunch. The price quoted was RMB550/person in a large group. For just a private party tour with tour guide, the quote went up to RMB1,000/person.)

Zhouzhuang, once called Zhenfengli, is a town in Jiangsu province, China. It is located within Kunshan county-level city, 30 km southeast of Suzhou. In 1086, Zhou Digong, a noted Buddhist, contributed 13 hectares of land to the Full Fortune Temple. The town got its present name as a memorial of the donor. It is noted for its profound cultural background, the well-preserved ancient residential houses, the elegant watery views and the strong local colored traditions and customs. In an area of half a square kilometer, 60 percent of the structures were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town is surrounded and divided by lakes and rivers, 14 stone bridges cross the rivers, showing distinctive views of the water town. Twin Bridges are the most famous as considered the symbol of the town. Crossing the two crisscross rivers and connecting at the middle, Twin Bridges look like a Chinese old-style Chinese key. In 1984, 38 canvases of the notable painter, Chen Yifei, were exhibited in a New York gallery of Armand Hammer, chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation. "Memory of Hometown" which depicts Twin Bridges was one of the items on display and has gained the world's attention for the town. The painting was chosen to be the first day cover of the United Nations' postage stamp in 1985. Two houses of wealthy Qing Dynasty families provide an interesting glimpse into the daily life of ancient China in a small rural village. One rich man named Shen was very worried about assassination attempts. Thus he took the precaution of making all of the thresholds in his house extremely high to slow down any would-be killer. Standing on Zhongshi Street which is opposite to Puqing Bridge, Chengxu Taoist Temple was built during 1086-1093 of the Song Dynasty and also known as Sanctity Hall (Shengtang Hall). After several periods of expansion, it is one of the most famous Taoist temples in Wuzhong Region. In an area of 1,500 square meters (1,800 square yards), simple but majestic Shengdi and Doumu halls, Yuhuang, Wenchang and Shengdi pavilions are really elaborate works and masterpieces of Taoist architectures.
Suzhou is a beautiful city with many water towns around. You can't miss the landscape.
