Pet Food Danger Gauge 90% - Questionably Safe For Pets

I have never rated a product quite like this one. ZiwiPeak left a lot of guess work with the ingredient list they provide for this over priced bag of questionable ingredients. Can you believe ZiwiPeak is getting over $10.00 a pound for dog food? New York Strip stakes and a chef to cook them would be cheaper than ZiwiPeak Dog Food!

Animal Fats - Used to encourage a pet to eat ingredients they normally would not eat. Ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis. This can be a very painful condition for dogs. In addition, most companion animals do not need extra fat in their diets.

Chickory Syrup (sugar) -

Used to encourage pets to eat ingredients they normally would not eat. Sugar - William D. Cusick/The Animal Advocate - all forms of sugar carbohydrates have been found to be detrimental, except for lactose found in the milk of a lactating bitch for her puppy.

"Lamb - Meat" - What is this supposed to mean? If this ingredient is lamb the company would say "lamb". Why did they put a dash between the two words? Is ZiwiPeak trying to be tricky? Lamb, without the meat would be good for dogs.

"Meat" is often rendered dogs and cats as well as other animals such as road-kill. When the source of the meat is known it will be listed as beef, poultry, chicken, turkey, etc. If the source of the meat is not known it is simply called "meat".

Liver (what source?) - Did the liver come from the "meat"?

Tripe (by-products) - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, Tripe is a type of edible offal from the stomachs of various domestic animals. Here I thought it was fish or something not the contents of some animal's gut. Let's look at this one "Offal".

Offal - Offal is the entrails and internal organs of a butchered animal. The word does not refer to a particular list of organs, but includes most internal organs other than muscles or bones. Depending on the cultural context, offal may be considered as waste material that is thrown away, or as delicacies that command a high price. Offal not used directly for human or animal food is often processed in a rendering plant, producing material that is used for animal feed, fertilizer, or fuel.

Heart & Kidney (what source?) the same domestic animal that was called "meat" ?

Vitamins & Minerals (which ones and from what source?) - Are these vitamins and minerals even good for a dog?

Lecithin - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - A major source of lecithin is soybean oil. The use of Corn, Wheat, and Soy are causing such awful conditions in pets including:

  • Abnormal nail growth
  • Bad breath
  • Blindness
  • Bloat
  • Cancer
  • CRF
  • Cushings Disease
  • Deafness
  • Dental disease
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Ear aches
  • Ear infections
  • Early pet death
  • Fever
  • Hair loss
  • Heart conditions
  • Hot Spots on the skin
  • IBD
  • Kidney conditions
  • Liver conditions
  • Moles and warts
  • Seizures
  • Sore feet
  • Tumors
  • Weight gain

I once met someone who talked a lot like these people at ZiwiPeak speak about their dog food ingredients. The man I met was a fast talking car salesman. He later spent time in prison for ripping people off. I wonder how long ZiwiPeak has been in business? I wonder how long that scammer I met has been out of prison? Hmmm.

Dear Susan,

Your comments about ZiwiPeak "Daily Dog Cuisine" needs correcting.

Firstly the formulation is based on what a wolf or big cat would hunt in the wild.

Venison Cuisine recipe;

65% Venison Meat (muscle removed from the sketelal bones). Organs mentioned in decending order are as they occur in the animal. Venison Liver, Venison Tripe (cold wash stomach lining), Venison Heart & Venison Kidney.

ZiwiPeak has removed the water from a raw diet and created a self stable complete diet.

ZiwiPeak is expensive per lb, but once you calculate the cost per portion per day it is less than feeding a good quality raw diet.

Ziwipeak is changing the lives of many suffering cats and dogs with problems with carb based kibbles. Many pet owners know a raw diet is the best for their pet but for various reason prefer a product like ZiwiPeak that is just about as good.

ziwiPeak is not a product that needs defending.

You're misreading the label. It's:

Lamb - Meat (as in the meat of the lamb, muscle, skin, fat, etc.), Liver (as in the lamb liver), Tripe, Heart and Kidney (as in lamb tripe, heart and kidney.)

In light of the correct, dare I say, common sense reading of the ingredient list, you should reconsider you rating.

At first glance this food was a miracle to me. My puppy would not eat anything else...we tried 7 different types of food with no luck. I was relieved when he started scarfing it down on the way home. The lady at cutter's mill said that it was expensive...but its jerky texture had an excellent track record with picky eaters and it is good for them because it doesn't have any of the corn products and closer resembled a dog's natural diet. It is also supposed to be better because Austrailia has higher standards for dog food than we do. So far things have been great except two complaints.

1. It doesn't stay moist like most jerky...it tends to dry out very quickly even when the bag is sealed.

2. Both my original puppy, and my second puppy...BOTH seem to have extreme skin dryness and dandruff and are itching constantly.

I am considering making my own food for them that is natural and healthy.

I would like to address these points one by one.As someone who was buying organic meat and ingredients which are comparable to New Zealand's grass fed animals with no mad cow etc... , it was far cheaper feeding Ziwi Peak 2.2 lb (lasts my 15 lb dog about a month)which being nutrient dense, requires very small amounts, then my bill was per week. (Packaged dog food contained multiple allergens, so I ended up preparing a controlled diet to deal with my dog who had the most severe problems)

Fats ARE a normal part in a canine diet IF they come from the animal source as you can see in Wolf kills. The subcu layer or fat layer is eaten routinely.

Meat. I beleive you may have confused the word meat with meal which is the thing which is not desirable.

Tripe & Offal are both a naturally consumed food source from prey animals for canines. We(society) have introduced an cheaper and artificial diet to dogs which became popular during a period of time when society was experiencing war and depression.

The bag precisely lists that all included parts are from the represented source. For instance: Venison meat(not meal),fish, venison liver, venison tripe etc...

The vitamins and minerals are pretty much accepted in standard raw food diet so unless your animal has a known allergen to them they should be just fine.

Lecithin is any of a group of yellow-brownish fatty substances occurring in animal and plant tissues, and in egg yolk, composed of phosphoric acid, choline, fatty acids, glycerol, glycolipids, triglycerides, and phospholipids (e.g., phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol).

I don't know what source they are using personally, but I can find out.

My dogs went from constant allergic reactions in every type of food I fed (I tried quite a few high end diets) to shiny skin, coat and no more itch. I finally had allergen panels run on the one with the worst trouble and it was almost impossible to find diets that didn't contain either 1 or more of her problem foods.

With mine, they need salmon oil in thier diet or light dry skin becomes an issue. I usually feed Venison and Fish which helps but still need to add the Salmon which takes care of it completely.

Since so little is needed to provide a healthy and good weight(dried is concentrated and since they don't use fillers to bulk up the weight, I add warm water enough to cover the food and help them feel fuller, with the added benefit of increased water intake because normally they don't drink as much as they should.

Since my vet is impressed with the change in my girls after all we went through, I am not worried that I made a wrong decision.

By the way, I am innately distrustful of what I am told regarding dog food and it was not the advertising on the bag that made me decide to give it a try but rather the ingredient list and the fact NZ doesn't have a lot of the diseased animal problems that we do since they feed thiers the natural diet of grass they were designed for by nature.

ZiwiPeak is one of the best, if not the best, pet foods out there. Seriously. These statements seem exaggerated and biased because of the high price. The ingredients are of extremely high quality (hence the high price) and not questionable at all- the sources are all right there ON THE BAG, not on the ingredient list! Sure, they don't use catchy advertising or catchy logos, because they simply don't need to. The food quality and great results speak for themselves, as I could clearly tell that it made a huge difference on my little terrier, Tut. My pup poops less, itches less, and looks amazing thanks to this major upgrade in food.

I believe the bad review was because of the unfamiliarity with such super premium ingredients. It's not very common that dog food is made with such expensive ingredients and this brand is relatively unknown. This food is mainly meat, which is great since dogs are carnivores, and your dog will eat much less than with the cheaper food. Absolutely the best, no fillers what-so-ever and every essential vitamin and mineral is in there. (You shouldn't feed dogs meat only because that would require supplements of vitamins and minerals on the side.) My puppy will never ever eat anything else again.

I have never read anything more false in my life. All those problems listed above, this food corrects them.

She must not be familiar with the true high end dog foods (or she must have something against them) because this food is number one.

gosh, does she have something against the ziwipeak people or what?

I once rad a review from Susan Peters that talked a lot about things she knew nothing of....hmmm, doesn't sound so different from the car salesman. And clearly you can't properly read a label, so why on earth would anyone take your advice on what to feed their animals?
