Zombie Survival Guide
73
Okay so here's the bad news, your smack dab in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. The good news your alive, but for now. Now your probably asking yourself at this point what do I do now. Sure there are alot of guides and books on the subject. (Max Brooks' zombie survival guide is one I personally recommend you reading) But how many of those guides are written by someone with military experience, by someone who knows about tactics and small arms, and someone with a vast knowledge of zombie horror movies.............probably not all that many I would imagine. This page is designed to provide you with helpful information that will protect you and those around you against the undead.
The first thing you need to consider is shelter, and fast. Now in the initial outbreak their numbers are going to be small and scattered. If the zombies are the traditional slower zombies then this period could last up to a week. If there more the 28 days/weeks fast zombies, then a day or two at the most. The populations panic and fear are going to be your biggest enemies. Stay off roads and major population areas as best you can, and keep a low profile You don't need to be accidently shot at because someone mistook you for a zombie. Any home or building will do at this point and if the outbreak is contained right away, say within 48 hrs to a week this will be all you'll need. If the outbreak is out of control your are going to need a building that offers a much more solid defense. Also avoid hospitals, emergency and government buildings, and Church's for they will be packed with people and potential future zombies. Things to consider for a more permanent defendable building are
-Good vantage point of the surrounding terrain
-As far as possible from population areas
-Does it have walls and gates
-How many entrances and exits in the building
-Is it too large/small for myself or my group to properly defend
Next you need information on whats going on. Check the Internet if its still available (I recommend using Google Earth to get a detailed view of your area that you can use as a map) as well as local news stations and radio for updates on safe houses and steps being taken to contain the threat. Take notes on hot spots to see how close you are to the danger. If you are in a group you should assign one person to this task, there will be more then enough work to keep everyone up and busy with other tasks. This individual can them brief everyone on regular intervals as to the situation.
Supplies are your next priority, primarily food and clean water. Unless power goes down right away you should be able to get water from taps for a few days. Clean and fill and bathtubs and any containers for drinking water. Ensure you ration it, you don't know how long your going to have to stay put.
If you have enough supplies in place you can look at your next step which is building defenses. In an initial outbreak this may be something simple like blocking doors, boarding up windows, and knocking out staircases to defend from the top floor. If it becomes out of control and you find a more secure building, here are some ideas that you can use to better defend your position.
-Turn buses and cars into barricades to surround your building
-Dig ditches and scatter large objects around your position to slow the zombies down and break up and tightly packed hordes
-Set up traps like pits to thin their numbers
-Occupy or build high points or towers to keep lookout, or snipe any zombies coming into range
Remember your defence depends on time and available resources, both of which may be few. Make sure you use what you have to it's full potential
Now that you have supplies, water, and an area that you can defend from, you need to think about weapons. Hopefully you had access to some firearms during the initial phases, if not and your able to look in your immediate area for anywhere you think might have weapons and supplies. Check hunting, camping, and any military surplus stores for guns, bows and knives. If there's a police station nearby that's abandoned check it for guns as well. (only if its abandoned and not full of zombies) If you can't leave your area and you have no weapons that your brought, look for anything that can be turned into one. An example would be a chunk of lead pipe that you could sharpen the end to make a spear, or sharpen the edges of a shovel. Use your imagination and the possibilities are endless.
So you've done all that, your as secure as you can possibly be. Your food and water should last you for months with rationing, and your decently armed to protect yourself, now what do you do? The answer is easy, set a routine. Keep your mind and body active, play boardgames or chess. Exercise on a regular basis. Set up a shift routine to watch the outside for activity (Remember your shift schedule has to cover 24hrs a day every day............you have to always be ready for an attack) If there numbers are small check the surrounding area for any supplies. And don't let your guard down, practice drills to keep yourself and your team ready for action.
With those measures in place your chances of surviving a zombie outbreak are pretty good. Always remember though to have a plan and be prepared. Before an outbreak enroll in classes such as basic first aid and CPR. Take a firearms course, and get plenty of practice with as many different guns as possible. All guns will have the same basic setup, but have different recoil and feel to them. (A shotgun is going to feel and require reloading differently then an assault rifle would) Learn how to operate different types of veichles, such as larger trucks that require air brakes. Take martial arts such as Kendo that utilize using a sword or melee weapon, as this will make it easier to handle when facing a zombie face to face.
I Hope these tips have been helpful in preparing for a zombie attack.
