Accepting Credit Cards. It always pays to now what you should look out for when you use your credit card online. Being able to handle credit card transactions is a necessity for businesses that have an internet site. Small businesses find that visitors to their site are less likely to use their credit card if the site is not secure. Ensuring you have a secure site is the easiest way to guarantee visitors will give you their credit card details and order from you.

The simplest way to check that a site is secure for a credit card transaction is by looking at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where you will see a small [verisign] logo. Using this system is about as safe as it can get when using your details online although no method is eve guaranteed completely secure. The importance to the customer cannot be underestimated, as it can make the difference of them buying from you or not at all.

There is something else you should keep in mind when shopping on the internet. Although many websites accept credit card payments, some are safer to use than others. It is important to remember that there is something else you should watch for, not just the verisign logo. Always look for a web address that starts with https:// an not http://, if you see the ‘s' in the address it means it's secure.

When looking at sites that accept credit cards, it is always wise to be wary as there are a number that have been set up purely to gather credit card information from the users. It is actually quite easy to be tricked by these ‘phishing' sites, as they are now known. These ‘phishing' scams often start with an official looking email from your Credit Card Company or bank requesting you follow a link to update or confirm your personal information. If you follow the link you will be transferred to a very real looking but also very false web site. The moment you enter your information, criminals have access to your accounts.

If you enter the internet address in manually you can get around this problem with ‘phishing' sites. By entering the internet address in yourself, manually, in a new browser, you will avoid the dangerous link. You can be safe in the knowledge that you will almost never be requested to confirm confidential information from an email. The first point of contact is usually a phone call. The easiest way make sure is to go onto the official website and find a contact telephone number. A site that is accepting credit cards transactions and is legitimate will always be happy to answer questions if you are unsure about ordering.
