What is Accidential Damage?
57
Accidental damage is a term thrown around by retail chain associates and warranty specialists. However, very few consumers understand the concept of accidental damage. Accidental damage is an umbrella term that refers to any sort of physical damage to a product. This can include, but is not limited to, water damage, cracks, spills or indentations. Depending on the scope of damage, accidental damage can extend far beyond normal wear and tear damage, and sometimes will still include it.
All limited warranties on product do not cover accidental damage and are used as a way to decline warranty service. If you have to send a product for repair, make sure to take pictures of it before you send it out. That way if the manufacturer cites the product was accidental damage, you can provide proof it does not. Any sort of physical damage to an item can be cause for a company to deny warranty service, because there is no way of knowing if the physical damage caused the issue to begin with. So, a manufacturer will decline service.
Many retailers, along with manufacturers, offer accidental damage warranty coverage in addition to their limited warranty. In most cases, it is much more expensive to do so, but it is well worth it depending on the situation. Laptops, MP3 players and digital cameras are some products that might benefit from accidental coverage. Since these items are often moved around, carried with and traveling with a person, they can easily become physically damaged no matter how careful a person is.
By understanding the concept of accidental damage, consumers can protect themselves from eventually facing it. Taking out an accidental damage warranty or by being extra careful, a person can avoid being denied warranty service for something, sometimes, out of their control. If you know what you are facing, how to take care of it and how to combat accidental damage, you will keep your electronics safe long after the initial purchase.
