Body Image Obsession: How Anorexia Can Be An Addiction
69
Addiction is easily related to an excessive consumption of a substance. Whether it be alcohol or drugs, the main point is, you've had too much of it, and you're well on your way to an addiction treatment facility. But what usually comes with an addiction? Effects on your physical, psychological, and mental state are usually the indicators of an addiction that's near to impossible to curb. So maybe that's how it goes for a hefty amount of drugs or alcohol, but what if it's an excessive refusal of something? Like in the case of anorexia. If one's behavior towards food is an obsession, compulsion, or addiction to have less and less of it, then this is also a cause for alarm.
Somehow, anorexia doesn't raise as many red flags as drug or alcohol abuse. Hollywood stars and models have even managed to make a career out of it, and because of this, women are trying to mimic them each day. But anorexia can just be as unhealthy, dangerous, and yes, even lethal when it gets out of hand. It can all start with dieting, and everything can just spin out control. Just like with alcoholism - it can all start with one drink, then you start to binge drink, then next thing you know, it's a daily habit that just won't seem to end.
If substance abuse can affect your whole person, then the same goes for anorexia. Your body suffers from malnutrition due to a compulsive desire to lose weight, which really stems from a distorted perception of your image and low self-esteem. What makes this situation even worse just like any other addiction, is that if you are suffering from anorexia, you are often unaware that you're putting your body through a whole lot of unnecessary pain. An intervention would have to take place for a person to even realize that he or she is a victim of anorexia.
Whether a Hollywood trend or a sick obsession, anorexia deserves just as much attention as other addictions out there and must be treated immediately at a rehabilitation center.
