Recent studies have shown that a certain kind of behavioral addiction has become a cause of alarm, especially among teens. This type of addiction is called video game addiction. Because video games provide an opportunity to escape teenage troubles, the youth has learned to depend on it or use it as a crutch. It has become a form of release for anger and angst, but it could also be a type of reward that one can give to himself or herself for achievements in school or at work. Because of this reasoning, an addiction to video games may be difficult to distinguish. But there are specific behavioral changes that can be observed in a video game addict.

Support groups and counseling can help in mild cases, while more severe cases require some medication and even electro-shock therapy. But whether mild or severe, you can observe specific signs in an individual. It is an addiction that is psychological in nature and it has been proven that it can cause withdrawal symptoms as well. Signs of video game addiction include irritability or even violent behavior when not playing, lack of concentration in school and at work, strained relationships with friends and family, and generally a loss of control over a regular healthy routine leading to an anti-social attitude. If you see these symptoms being exhibited to a person close to you, then you know something's definitely wrong and you must help.

Video game addiction may be a manifestation of a psychiatric deficiency such as depression or anxiety. An addiction can only make these conditions worse, so if a friend or family member is showing early signs of video game addiction that may be caused by depression or anxiety, then you should not hesitate to begin an intervention.
