adonis demystified: the 10 most handsome faces ever!

By Cris A

Beauty is not an exclusive right of women, it swings both ways. Yes, men can be beautiful, too. Just ask your sister if this notion doesn't sit well with you. So in the spirit of fair play and equality among genders, my friends (a very opinionated and vocal lot) and I rounded up all the pretty boys in Hollywood and came up with the crème de la crème. Ten men who will be remembered (if not for their talent) for their faces by our beauty-obssessed culture.

Rudolph Valentino

The Great Profile

Arguably the first male pop icon and sex symbol whose death caused so much hysteria that impersonators were said to have been hired to impersonate Fascist Blackshirt guards.

What to watch: The Sheik (silent movie, 1921)

Cary Grant

The Debonair

Known for his virile yet charming screen portrayals, he was named as the second Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute.

What to watch: To Catch a Thief (1955)

Paul Newman

The Birth of Cool

His liberalism and rebellious trait transcended the make believe world of cinema to real life, showing the world that activism could be blonde with blues eyes.

What to watch: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)

Alain Delon

The French Connection

Once hailed as the male Brigitte Bardot, perfume, clothing and even cigarrette brands were once tied to his name.

What to watch: Rocco and His Brothers (1960)

Antonio Banderas

The Latin Lover

He shot to fame in Hollywoodlandia when Madonna admitted to being smitten by him in a tell all docu in 1991. Fortunately for him, this didn't last for a mere 15 seconds.

What to watch: The Mask of Zorro (1998)

Leonardo DiCaprio

The Heartthrob

A hall of famer in People's Most Beautiful People lists, if there was one i.e., his blue eyes often steal the thunder from his acting chops and obscure his conscious efforts to be un-Tiger Beat.

What to watch: Titanic (1997)

Brad Pitt

The Golden Boy

His high-profile relationships with high-profile women only vindicate his stature as the most envied man alive (by men, of course).

What to watch: Meet Joe Black (1998)

Jude Law

The Englishman Cometh

The flag bearer of everything English across the continent, except for the stiff upper lip.

What to watch: Alfie (2004)

Will Smith

The Midas Touch

Fom being the Prince of Bel-Air to becoming the most powerful actor on the planet (according to Newsweek), surely his charisma has something to do with it.

What to watch: Hitch (2005)

Zac Efron

The Heir Apparent

In 2007, Rolling Stone officially declared that he is the "poster boy for tweenyboppers" everywhere.

What to watch: High School Musical (2006)

I saw Alain Delon in a television re-run once, just that one time and I still recall his beauty up until now!

i believe he was extremely populat during the 60s and early 70s, besides he wouldn't be called the male brigitte bardot for nothing! :D

Hi, Chris A.-Delon rates up there on my list. But no Patrick Dempsey or Hugh Jackman? :) I tend to like guys who are handsome but have a bit of character and ruggedness in their faces. All so much taste!

I've actually become impressed with Antonio Banderas as an actor-- Some of his less well known films are excellent.

So i now have an insight on what you look for in men! Yep, i've seen movies by Antonio Banders which he did back in Spain - before he got famous in the Madonna docu. He's quite a good actor I agree :D

I have often told a man he is "beautiful," and after the initial surprise, each has seemed pleased.

Good hub!

LOL it is only because beauty has always been associated with the female gender, but when you look it up in dictionaries you will find no rule that it should only be used to them. Beauty by any other name.... thanks for dropping by :D

Interesting how faces look in black and white photos -- I'm glad you chose to present them all in b and w. No wonder people used to think that the eyes were the portals for love -- that one actually fell for someone "through" the eyes. . . I can remember in my early teens seeing Paul Newman in Sweet Bird of Youth, and thinking that he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. Until Brad Pitt "did" Thelma and Louise, that is. These are all beautiful men, and thanks -- I don't know who Zac Ephron is, but will look for him!

I generally lean toward B&W photography, they're more dramatic and impactful. But that's just my opinion of course. Thansk for dropping by! Btw, Zac Efron is the kid in Disney's High School Musical movies :D

Hey Cris! Nice listing glad you included Brad, I'm a great fan, I was hoping to get a glimpse of him in Hollywood, but well, no luck. Have you seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? Brad has classic shots there, Angie is one lucky girl :(

AAAAAAAAAhh (how can you spell a long drawnout sigh) Paul Newman eyes... Great list Cris. You know who else could fit into this list of yours Yul Brenner. He had all the classic features associated with a beautiful face...

Great pictures too in your hub

About the sigh - I think I got what you meant with what you wrote LOL I' read somewhere that Paul Newman was the male Bette Davis with regards to his eyes.

Thanks for checking this hub out :D

Cris! You know how to pick 'em - THANK-YOU! for this lovely eye-candy.

Umm, I notice that Mel Gibson's eyes and all of Hugh Jackman are two missing elements in your line up. An oversight, I'm sure. Oh! and what about George Clooney. 'K, call me greedy!

I LIKE the scruffy Brad!

Really nice hub, Cris! :)

From your list I'd choose Paul Newman but I'd really appreciate if if you would send Viggo Mortensen by return. He turns my pages !

Amanda Severn profile image

Amanda Severn  says:

Looking at your list Chris, I was wondering what it was that makes these guys so sexy, and for me at least, it's the voices as well as the looks. Cary Grant has an instantly recognizable voice, deep and mellow, and reassuring. Antonio Banderas has one of the sexiest accents ever, and Jude Law has that classy Englishman thing going. I'd also like to add in Mel Gibson, and Bruce Willis, as I have a soft spot for cheeky bad boys (well, on celluloid if not in real life LOL!)

Cris A  says:

Thanks ladies. It's really hard to tell what women look for in a man. But I hope the 10 here would do just fine :D
