Where To Start With Woodburning/Pyrographics

When you decide you want to try your hand at woodburning the next step is to find a burning tool. I started with an old soldering iron I found in a box in the garage, not the best choice but, it got me motivated. A hobbyist iron can be purchased in almost any crafts department of your local discount store. Several manufacturers offer equal quality irons for $25. to $30. That is what I used for the first 35 years of my career.

The average iron takes at least 10 minutes to heat good enough to work with. Some pyrography tools come with an asst. of points used to achieve different affects. It is wise to have a good pair of pliers and an ashtray or some other heat proof tray to put hot points in when they are removed. It is also a good idea to work on a fireproof surface. The 10 minute waiting period is a great time to set up your work area. Always read any information about the iron you purchase before starting your project.

Set Up A Work Area

A Website To Ponder

The Woodburner has a good amount of information that will help someone who has little knowledge of this art form. The site covers a lot of simple as well as technical areas involved with woodburning. I highly recommend this reading material, if you are considering pyrography for self expression.

Purchase Driftwood

There are websites available that offer driftwood for sale. It might be a little costly but if you consider the time it takes to go find wood, this might be a good alternative. Click on the links below to check into a few sites offering wood for sale.

I need to get to that woodburning project I keep talking about. I truly love the medium, but I feel I keep putting off my project for way too long. Hopefully I will get around to it soon.

SweetiePie,

I have HAD to put off doing work for a lack of space to work in. Now I have a new place but it will take some work to make it suitable. I have been going there as much as possible to get it fixed up. Won't be long now.
