RSS

RSS is relatively a bit difficult to understand for those who have never subscribed to RSS feed. RSS is a way of providing content to the user's browser or desktop in an efficient way. RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are normally provided in three ways: headlines only, headlines with excerpts and full text feeds.

RSS stands for the the following formats:

  • RSS 2.0: Really Simple Syndication
  • RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.90: RDF Site Summary
  • RSS 0.91: Rich Site Summary

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) allows you to get information sent directly to you without opening the sites related to that information individually. Uses of RSS can not be described in short. In fact, you can do at least 100 cool things with RSS if you have a reader. You can have whole world in your pocket with an eReader. My intention is to discuss RSS Feed and its use related to blogs and web articles. RSS feed links actually improves visibility of links to search engines and netusers directly or indirectly.

Here, at Hubpages, RSS feed icon is found either as a capsule in Edit mode or on My Profile page of each author. I faced lot of difficulty in using RSS capsule. I failed to understand that what need to be assigned as the URL for RSS feed. With lot of error and trial I came to know that this is not much complicated. URL in case of authors of Hubpages appears like this: http://hubpages.com/author/premsingh/latest/?rss; any author of hubpages can simply substitute premsingh with his or her name.

If you use mozilla firefox, RSS feed icon is shown in address bar of your hub. You can subscribe your hub's RSS feed by clicking that icon. You can directly assign your individual hubs/blogs URL by just putting a question mark and rss in the end of your hub's URL. It will appear as shown below for this hub.

http://hubpages.com/hub/all-the-prems-hubs-at-one-place?rss

Uses of RSS:

Authors of hubpages can use RSS feed in the end or bottom part of the hub above the "Comments" capsule. By default three latest hubs and their brief description is shown in this capsule. However, one can use upto eight numbers and change the description to short or detail by clicking appropriate button. Advantage of turning on RSS feed on your hubs lies in the fact that visitors to your hubs will know that you have published the given hubs recently.

Subscribing to RSS Feed:

All the authors can subscribe to their own RSS feed by clicking the button "Subscribe to Premsingh's RSS feed" . Their own names will be there in place of premsingh. When you click on this tab, a screen will appear and you have to select either blogline, My yahoo, Google or your email client like Outlook. You will require to open an account on these sites to subscribe RSS as News feed

Importance of RSS feed:

If you have reached to this point you may have curiosity to know why should I subscribe to RSS feed. I was reading a post in the forum by a leading hubber and she advised to subsribe to RSS feed. Taking her advice I subscribe to RSS feed using blogline. Perhaps you would not believe that traffic increased to my hubs. Even to those hubs that have not seen a single visitor in the last 7 days. Now I researched this RSS topic and found that there are sites where you can subscribe your blogs as RSS feed and you will witness a tremendous increase of traffic to your hubs. Only problem: you have to submit your blogs to these site manually but manual submission is claimed to be worth of your time spend on submission. I am listing below these sites. The sites hyperlinked has been verified my me for their usefulness but sites not-hyperlinked are to checked for their usefulness in promoting blogs. It takes lot of time so I'll be doing it on day to day basis. Visitors of this hub may also indicate or suggest in the comments box below a site they have already visited and found usefull to subscribe their RSS feed

Thanks Weblog for the first comment and that too so generous. This hub has been published few days back and other reason may be this (RSS) appears complicated in the begining but it has tremendous effects on the traffic. I am thankful to hubbers who suggested its useful in the Forum postings and after using it I also found it coorect. All hubbers should use this feature to improve traffic to their hubs.

I know, I'm aware of RSS feeds and the advantages. I got more clear idea in Jenny's(InspirePub) hub about rss and rss in hubpages. I liked this hub too. All the best.
