Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device

Are you looking for information on Amazon Kindle to help you decide whether to buy it or not? If you are, this hub page reviews and reveals everything you want to know about this hot new gadget. You'll get the product specs, how the technology works, what it does, pricing and where to buy it.

What is Amazon Kindle?

The Kindle is Amazon's new wireless reading device. And according to the team that developed the new reader and best selling authors (Michael Lewis and Toni Morrison, to name a few), Kindle is changing where, when, what and how you read your favorite ebooks, blogs, magazines and newspapers. It uses electronic paper display technology to make it easier on your eyes when reading documents; you can read without the glare you'd experience on your computer screen or with other electronic readers. Not only can you read your favorite ebooks, magazines, blogs and newspapers with it, but you can also download these items directly to your Kindle from the Kindle Store in less than a minute.

Amazon Kindle Specs and Product Details

At 7.5" x 5.3" x 0.7" and 10.3 ounces, Amazon Kindle is a very lightweight ebook reader and thinner than most popular paperback novels. The screen is a 6" diagonal E-InkĀ® electronic paper display (screen resolution is 600 x 800 pixels at 167 ppi, 4-level gray scale). The angular wedge design may not win any beauty awards, but it's designed for easy use and long-form reading. You can navigate Kindle from either side and with the QWERTY keyboard you can order/download ebooks, magazines, newspapers and blogs, as well as bookmark/search text. When you buy a Kindle, each order includes: the Kindle electronic reader, a book cover for the device, a power adapter and a USB 2.0 cable.

Kindle can store approximately 200 files, but when you add an SD memory card, the storage capacity expands from 180 MB to up to 4 GB, which will make it easier store audio books & mp3 files (If you run low on storage, Amazon can store files for you). With it being completely wireless, Kindle doesn't need cables, a PC, syncing or Wi-Fi hot spot - it's ready to use right out of the box. There are no system requirements for the device because as long as wireless is on you don't need a computer to use it. When wireless isn't on or you find yourself outside of the Whispernet coverage area, you can use the USB 2.0 cable Kindle comes with on a Windows or Mac compatible PC. Whispernet (which runs on Sprint's high speed data network, EVDO) is what allows Kindle to do all the cool things it can do wirelessly. And there are no monthly bills for wireless delivery of documents purchased at the Kindle Store - Amazon foots the bill for that.

How To Use Amazon Kindle

Shop At The Kindle Store

When you buy a Kindle, there are 3 things to keep in mind: (1) wireless covereage is only avaliable in the United States therefore, Kindles aren't being sold or shipped to customers living outside of the USA; (2) you are paying for first generation technology; and (3) first generation technology is usually always relatively expensive. That being said, when you buy Amazon Kindle you're only paying ($399.00) for the device itself because there are no costs to you for the wireless connection (as I pointed out earlier, Amazon is paying that for you). If you live in Alaska or Montana, there is no wireless coverage available. That means Amazon doesn't charge you for the digital delivery of items you purchase from the Kindle Store (however, Amazon does charge a small wireless delivery fee for the wireless delivery of your own documents onto Kindle).

The cool thing about shopping at the Kindle Store is you can purchase and download more than 100,000 books, including most of the New York Times Best Sellers in less than 1 minute. You can also wirelessly download top U.S. and international newspapers, magazines and more than 250 blogs. Unless marked differently, New York Times Best Sellers and new releases are only $9.99. You can also get free sample chapters of books before you buy and you get free wireless access to Wikipedia.
