The modern American Bandog Mastiff(or Bandogge) is a rugged dog, heavily boned and with prominent muscles, intimidating in appearance and ferocious when provoked.

Most of this breed are black brindle, but there are some black, blue, red as well as tawny colorings.

Even though the modern "breed" is only around 40 years, the precursor strains of bandog go back centuries, before the Crusades. Many believe these bandogs to be the perfect protection and working class guard dogs.

There are other bandog strains today under different names, but the most famous strain, celebrated for their stable temperaments and outstanding working qualities, owe much to the work of Joe Lucero and John Swinford.

The ancient name "Bandogge" is supposed to have originated from the use of strong bonds and chains to secure the dogs during the day - at night they would be loosed to prowl and to protect the "home" area.

Surprisingly for such intimidating dogs, they crave nothing more than to be in the company of their owners, to please them, and, of course, to protect them - and they hate to be left alone. The Bandog can indeed get along with other household pets, if it is familiar with them from young.
