How to Help an Animal Shelter

There are many ways to support your local animal shelter. Animal shelter support can include donations, fundraising, walking dogs and socializing cats.

Animal shelters often rely on donations and need the support of the community to keep things running.

Never buy an animal from a pet store. Instead, adopt an animal from your local shelter or a satellite shelter.

10 Ways Ways I Can Help Out At My Local Animal Shelter

  1. Donate Every dollar counts. You can also donate your time and supplies.
  2. Foster Take an animal into your home as a foster parent. This gives an animal a needed break from the cage.
  3. Adopt Who says you can't buy love? If you are ready for the commitment, adopt an animal from your local shelter.
  4. Volunteer Shelter dogs need to be walked, loved and groomed. Shelter cats need to be socialized, stimulated and nurtured. Volunteer possibilities are endless.
  5. Spay or Neuter Your Pet Help control the pet population by getting your pet spayed or neutered. This will reduce the burden on shelters everywhere.
  6. Report Cruelty Cruelty to an animal is one of the most cowardly and inhumane crimes. Animals are innocent and it is our job to protect them. Immediately, report animal cruelty to your local shelter.
  7. Microchip Get your animal microchipped. This makes things easier for you, your pet and the shelter if your furry friend should become lost.
  8. Fundraise Raise funds for animals. From bake sales to local animal calendars, there are many ways to raise money for animals.
  9. Don't Support Pet Stores Adopt an animal from your local shelter. Pet stores often fail to provide proper care for animals and encourage puppy mill breeding. Support pet stores that house and adopt shelter animals.
  10. Wish List Your local shelter is always going to need items such as collars, leashes, laundry detergent and food. Try to contribute to the wish list as often as you can.

I loved this hub, I'm an animal lover but so far have not found a shelter which needs my help in the manner I have to offer, but I'll keep my eyes open as this is a great way to acquire an animal.
