Some exciting discoveries have been made in the field devoted to antioxidants that is the key to help keep our skin looking beautiful, young, and supple for a long time. Antioxidants attack free radicals that can damage and kill cells. Antioxidants have long been touted in the longevity field to keep our hearts healthy, but now the benefits of antioxidants are being applied to the field of skin care.
One of the best is Alpha Lipoic Acid that is already in every cell in your body. It takes blood sugar (glucose) and converts it into energy. As an antioxidant it can neutralize harmful free radicals. It is usually combined with two vitamins that also have antioxidant properties:
· Vitamin C
· Vitamin E
Ascorbic acid or vitamin C helps not only your skin but is also important for cardiovascular health and cell replication. Our bodies do not retain Vitamin C and it secreted via urine. A time-release product is the best. Its toxicity level is low so you cannot overdose on it. Dr. Linus Pauling who lived to the ripe old age of 93 took up to 10 grams of Vitamin C per day. He won two Nobel prizes. One in chemistry in 1954 and the other was for peace in 1962. Many believe that Pauling advice on nutrients were wrong and that he was a quack, but it sure did the Vitamin C industry some good. Sales of Vitamin C skyrocketed. Normal dosage is now considered to be 500mg, although some people take grams and grams of the stuff.
Everything in moderation, in accordance with Aristotle in his Nicomachean Ethics.
Vitamin E is also a powerful antioxidant vitamin. It is part of a class of elements called tocopherols. Like Vitamin C it helps protect against the damage that can be caused by free radicals. Vitamin E is not eliminated like Vitamin C. It “sticks” around. It can be used topically or taken internally It is said to reduce cholesterol and ward of the ravages of cancer and is a great cream or lotion for the skin as well as a moisturizer. Some products combine both Vitamin E and C.
The important thing to remember is when Alpha Lipoic Acid is taken with Vitamin C and Vitamin E, it appears to make these Vitamins work better and more efficiently in the body. It can be taken orally or as a topical preparation.
And don’t forget to eat a healthy diet that includes foods high in antioxidants.
Here are some foods with high levels of antioxidants:
· Prunes
· Plums
· Broccoli
· Brussels sprouts
· Raisins
· Blueberries
· Kale
· Spinach
· Cranberries
Remember. These products taken on a regular basis can rejuvenate your skin and perhaps make you look 10 years younger.
